better to place log on D:\ drive - as its designed for that

If you place log file on D Drive, it will always be deleted when you will restart your vm.. when VM will come online after restart, your DB will lose its log file and will never come online. If you wanna use D drive for databases, use for TEMPDB, not for any other system or user DB.
