In VRRP-A (Virtual Router Redundancy Protocol – Active), which is commonly used in Arista and Brocade (now Extreme Networks) networking equipment, a floating IP address is used as a virtual gateway IP address. This floating IP is shared between routers or switches in the VRRP-A group.
Its main purpose is to act as a common next-hop IP for devices on the network (both uplink and downlink). If the active router fails, the VRRP-A protocol ensures that another router takes over the floating IP, thereby maintaining gateway availability and seamless traffic forwarding
