Exam AWS-SysOps topic 1 question 752 discussion

Exam question from Amazon's AWS-SysOps
Question #: 752
Topic #: 1
[All AWS-SysOps Questions]

A company is setting up a VPC peering connection between its VPC and a customer's VPC. The company VPC is an IPv4 CIDR block of 172.16.0.0/16, and the customer's is an IPv4 CIDR block of 10.0.0.0/16. The SysOps Administrator wants to be able to ping the customer's database private IP address from one of the company's Amazon EC2 instances.
What action should be taken to meet the requirements?

  • A. Ensure that both accounts are linked and are part of consolidated billing to create a file sharing network, and then enable VPC peering.
  • B. Ensure that both VPC owners manually add a route to the VPC route tables that points to the IP address range of the other VPC.
  • C. Instruct the customer to set up a VPC with the same IPv4 CIDR block as that of the source VPC: 172.16.0.0/16.
  • D. Instruct the customer to create a virtual private gateway to link the two VPCs.

In my opinion Option B is the correct answer https://docs.aws.amazon.com/vpc/latest/peering/peering-configurations-full-access.html#two-vpcs-full-access case: Two VPCs Peered Together They use the same CIDR from the question. You just have to update the route

Selected Answer: B
In order for the VPC peering connection to work, both VPC owners need to add a route to their respective VPC route tables that points to the IP address range of the other VPC. This allows the traffic to flow between the VPCs.

The question specifies this is between a company and a customer. Assuming each entity has it's own AWS account, B is not the correct answer. You can't route traffic between two AWS accounts using only the routing table. You would need virtual private gateways and a direct connect gateway. This leads the correct answer to be - Answer: D Reference - (Scroll down to Virtual Private Gateway across accounts) https://docs.aws.amazon.com/directconnect/latest/UserGuide/direct-connect-gateways-intro.html

Answer is not and will never be D. Direct Connect Gateway attachment that is referred in that URL is for connecting Account Z VPC to the on premise resources.Direct Connect Gateway is not transitive between VPCs. That is the exact reason why AWS came up with Transit Gateway concept. In this question it is good old VPC Peering : https://docs.aws.amazon.com/vpc/latest/peering/what-is-vpc-peering.html , if you can read this you will see that VPC Peering can be used across different AWS Accounts.
