Exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional topic 1 question 123 discussion

An organization is planning to host a Wordpress blog as well a joomla CMS on a single instance launched with VPC. The organization wants to have separate domains for each application and assign them using Route 53. The organization may have about ten instances each with two applications as mentioned above.
While launching the instance, the organization configured two separate network interfaces (primary + ENI) and wanted to have two elastic IPs for that instance. It was suggested to use a public IP from AWS instead of an elastic IP as the number of elastic IPs is restricted.
What action will you recommend to the organization?

  • A. I agree with the suggestion but will prefer that the organization should use separate subnets with each ENI for different public IPs.
  • B. I do not agree as it is required to have only an elastic IP since an instance has more than one ENI and AWS does not assign a public IP to an instance with multiple ENIs.
  • C. I do not agree as AWS VPC does not attach a public IP to an ENI; so the user has to use only an elastic IP only.
  • D. I agree with the suggestion and it is recommended to use a public IP from AWS since the organization is going to use DNS with Route 53.

Suggested Answer: B 🗳️
A Virtual Private Cloud (VPC) is a virtual network dedicated to the user's AWS account. It enables the user to launch AWS resources into a virtual network that the user has defined. An Elastic Network Interface (ENI) is a virtual network interface that the user can attach to an instance in a VPC. The user can attach up to two
ENIs with a single instance. However, AWS cannot assign a public IP when there are two ENIs attached to a single instance. It is recommended to assign an elastic IP in this scenario. If the organization wants more than 5 EIPs they can request AWS to increase the number.

B When you add a second network interface, the system can no longer auto-assign a public IPv4 address. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/MultipleIP.html#working-with-multiple-ipv4

Option B is incorrect. Option B mentions "it is required to have only an elastic IP since an instance has more than one ENI". That's not true. While AWS doesn't automatically assign a public IP address to an instance with multiple ENIs, it doesn't mean that only Elastic IPs (EIPs) are allowed. It doesn't restrict the use of public IPs altogether. Public IP addresses can still be manually assigned from the pool of available IPs in the VPC subnet to each network interface (ENI) associated with the instance. Therefore, Option B oversimplifies the situation and doesn't provide the full picture.

Selected Answer: D
Based on the given scenario, the recommended action for the organization is: D. I agree with the suggestion and it is recommended to use a public IP from AWS since the organization is going to use DNS with Route 53. Explanation: In this scenario, the organization wants to host both a WordPress blog and a Joomla CMS on a single instance within a VPC. They also want to have separate domains for each application and assign them using Route 53. Additionally, they want to have two separate public IPs for the instance.

B https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/MultipleIP.html When you add a second network interface, the system can no longer auto-assign a public IPv4 address. You will not be able to connect to the instance over IPv4 unless you assign an Elastic IP address to the primary network interface (eth0). You can assign the Elastic IP address after you complete the Launch wizard. For more information

I don't quite understand what the question asks. If it asks whether an instance can have a public IP and an EIP at the same time, then the answer is yes. If it asks whether an instance can have 2 public IP, then No.

Correct Answer is A. You can auto assign a public IP , if instance has 1 ENI. However, if instance has more than 1 EN1, Public IP cannot be assigned. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/using-eni.html

but it is clearly mentioned that they wanted to have two elastic IPs for that instance. So the answer is B

I wasn't sure about this one; I believe this is old question. Although, even right now, AWS doesn't allow to attach two interfaces and have public IP. However, I launched simple EC2 with public IP. Then, manually attached 2 ENIs (each with associated EIP). This way I was able to have 3 public IPs for an EC2 instance. Does this make option D correct? or Am I missing something here?

Yes you can. As to how many ENIs you can attach to an instance, depends on instance type. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/using-eni.html

Yes, you can do what you said. But in the question, it is said "While launching the instance", so under the context, B is correct.
