Exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate SAA-C02 topic 1 question 10 discussion

A recently acquired company is required to build its own infrastructure on AWS and migrate multiple applications to the cloud within a month. Each application has approximately 50 TB of data to be transferred. After the migration is complete, this company and its parent company will both require secure network connectivity with consistent throughput from their data centers to the applications. A solutions architect must ensure one-time data migration and ongoing network connectivity.
Which solution will meet these requirements?

  • A. AWS Direct Connect for both the initial transfer and ongoing connectivity.
  • B. AWS Site-to-Site VPN for both the initial transfer and ongoing connectivity.
  • C. AWS Snowball for the initial transfer and AWS Direct Connect for ongoing connectivity.
  • D. AWS Snowball for the initial transfer and AWS Site-to-Site VPN for ongoing connectivity.

Definitely snowball for data transfer. As per the connectivity, 4 requirements here: Complete WITHIN a month, secure, consistent and BOTH companies need access. DirectConnect provides consistency, but it's not secure (it's private, that's different), it's a 1-to-1 direct connection and then you have up to 90 days to set it up (on average it takes more than 1 month, or at least that's what they said at the course). Site-to-Site VPN is secure and can be setup immediately in multiple sites. It's not consistent, but it can achieve consistency with Accelerated Site-to-Site VPN ("Accelerated Site-to-Site VPN makes user experience more consistent by using the highly available and congestion-free AWS global network.") So I'd go for Snowball and VPN (possibly Accelerated)

Also AWS Direct Connect is expensive one and I would also suggest Site-to-Site VPN along with snowball

It's secure and private though it is not encrypted.

1 month is for data transfer the question clearly says "after the data is transferred" they need a consistent connection which cannot be VPN hence Direct connect. ans C

why not C? https://aws.amazon.com/directconnect/ AWS DirectConnect is secure + it should be more consistent than VPN

it is D Because AWS Direct Connect does not encrypt your traffic that is in transit. And you have less than a month to the migration and Direct connect can take several weeks to months be deployed. Also, this company and its parent company will both require secure network connectivity https://docs.aws.amazon.com/directconnect/latest/UserGuide/encryption-in-transit.html https://docs.aws.amazon.com/whitepapers/latest/hybrid-connectivity/time-to-deploy.html

You're not doing the migration with Direct connect. You're doing it with Snowball. So your entire point of it taking too long is negated. Direct connect is still a private connection to your VPC.

Encryption protects against data diclosure, theft, interception... Direct Connect is a dedicated physical line, sure it is not encrypted, but it is not shared and it is not going throught the internet like a VPN... therefore, yes it is secure. Answer C at 100%! Snowball for the migration given the hundreds of TBs, and Direct Connect for consistent throughput (Surely not VPN)

Direct connect will take lots of time. there is one month constraint to migrate application

Direct connect with be used once the initial data is transferred. Hence C should be the right ans as Direct connect provides secure transfer

C- the question does not mention "cost effective"m therefore Snowball secures your data. Direct Connect is used for hybrid / consistent network connectivity between your on premises and cloud , with that been said it "bypasses the public internet" here you go. If the question has "cost effectiveness" mentioned yes then I would agree to use Site-to-Site VPN connection.

Selected Answer: D
Snowball is one time transfer. Direct connection is only required when large amount data need to transfer. But considering the use case once the data is transferred using snow family device there is only operational connectivity is required. So the cost effective solution I believe is D

First you migrate all the data to the AWS with Snowball as each app has 50TB. Then, after setting everything up, you want to have “secure network connectivity with consistent throughput from their data centers to the applications”, meaning the Direct Connect needs to be used. Because we connect directly to AWS network, the throughput will be very good and security can be ensured with IPSec.

DX might take several weeks to months and the question explicitly say it needs to be done WITHIN a month so it is D source: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/whitepapers/latest/hybrid-connectivity/time-to-deploy.html

wrong. direct connect takes a few days to setup, and question request 1 month, more than enough time to set up direct connect.

For the initial transfer, snowball handles our current task. Then for a continued dedicated connection, Direct Connect will serve us better. No internet connection is needed and Availability and consistency is guaranteed

The AWS Direct Connect cloud service is the shortest path to your AWS resources. While in transit, your network traffic remains on the AWS global network and never touches the public internet. This reduces the chance of hitting bottlenecks or unexpected increases in latency. https://aws.amazon.com/directconnect/
