Exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate SAA-C02 topic 1 question 47 discussion

A company runs an application in a branch office within a small data closet with no virtualized compute resources. The application data is stored on an NFS volume. Compliance standards require a daily offsite backup of the NFS volume.
Which solution meets these requirements?

  • A. Install an AWS Storage Gateway file gateway on premises to replicate the data to Amazon S3.
  • B. Install an AWS Storage Gateway file gateway hardware appliance on premises to replicate the data to Amazon S3.
  • C. Install an AWS Storage Gateway volume gateway with stored volumes on premises to replicate the data to Amazon S3.

Answer is 'B'. Question clearly states "small data closet with no virtualized compute resources" - this implies the need for an onsite hardware appliance.

exactly, it says "no VIRTUALIZED compute resources", and not "no compute resources at all". They already have physical compute/storage on-prem, they need cloud backup. Answer is A

They give answer "A", but their explanation is about "B"(Hardware Appliance). Anyway, this answer is B.

Agree with frizzo....its B just for that reason and a Hardware Appliance is actually a Dell PowerEdge server with software installed if the environment lacks VM capability. "Q: Why might I need a hardware appliance? A: The hardware appliance further simplifies procurement, deployment, and management of AWS Storage Gateway on-premises for IT environments such as remote offices and departments which lack existing virtual server infrastructure, adequate disk and memory resources, or staff with hypervisor management skills. It avoids having to procure additional infrastructure necessary for a virtual environment in order to operate the local Storage Gateway VM appliance." https://aws.amazon.com/storagegateway/faqs/#:~:text=Objects%20written%20through%20File%20Gateway,AWS%20as%20Amazon%20EBS%20snapshots.

I agree, it’s B “Frequently, branch offices, research and development departmental workgroups, and laboratory or industrial sites lack the on-premises infrastructure to run a virtual machine appliance, hypervisors, server clusters, and networked storage systems. Building and managing this infrastructure, or waiting for a future budgeting cycle to begin work or scale operations, simply may not make sense. The Storage Gateway Hardware Appliance can be dropped in and rapidly set up” https://aws.amazon.com/storagegateway/hardware-appliance/

Correct B: Q: Why might I need a hardware appliance? A: The hardware appliance further simplifies procurement, deployment, and management of AWS Storage Gateway on-premises for IT environments such as remote offices and departments which lack existing virtual server infrastructure, adequate disk and memory resources, or staff with hypervisor management skills. It avoids having to procure additional infrastructure necessary for a virtual environment in order to operate the local Storage Gateway VM appliance. https://aws.amazon.com/storagegateway/faqs/

Wonder why so many up-votes. The scenario has no virtualization resources. They need to get a hardware appliance. Answer is B.

B. confusion is about whether to use storage gateway - file / volume. As SG- File is NFS based, it should be Storage gayeway - file based Volume Gateways normally iSCSI block storage.

Correct answer is B as AWS Storage Gateway file gateway supports offsite backup of data to S3 with NFS support. Also, as there are no virtualized compute resources, a hardware appliance must be installed.
