Exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate SAA-C02 topic 1 question 22 discussion

A company wants to migrate a high performance computing (HPC) application and data from on-premises to the AWS Cloud. The company uses tiered storage on premises with hot high-performance parallel storage to support the application during periodic runs of the application, and more economical cold storage to hold the data when the application is not actively running.
Which combination of solutions should a solutions architect recommend to support the storage needs of the application? (Choose two.)

  • A. Amazon S3 for cold data storage
  • B. Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS) for cold data storage
  • C. Amazon S3 for high-performance parallel storage
  • D. Amazon FSx for Lustre for high-performance parallel storage
  • E. Amazon FSx for Windows for high-performance parallel storage

Agree. Could be E if Windows instances, but that's not specified so D sounds about right

I‘m not sure about E, as it is mentioned in the doc that Fsx for Lustre can also be linked to S3 buckets, allowing you to access and process data concurrently from both a high-performance file system and from the S3 API. Which is an advantage comparing to FSx for Windows in this scenario. Correct me if I misunderstand.

Answer - A&D Amazon FSx for Luster is used for High performance Parallel load. S3 can't be used for high performance load, its good for cold storage. EFS can be used where load is unprodective and spread across regions, which is not the case here.

ANSWER A & D , I recommend a combination of Amazon S3 and Amazon FSx to support the storage needs of the HPC application. Amazon S3 can be used as the cold storage tier to store the data when the application is not actively running. S3 is a highly durable and scalable object storage service that can be used to store and retrieve large amounts of data. Amazon FSx for Lustre can be used as the hot high-performance parallel storage tier to support the application during periodic runs of the application. FSx for Lustre is a high-performance file system that provides a fully managed and scalable infrastructure for HPC applications. FSx for Lustre integrates with S3, making it easy to move data between the two storage tiers.

A and D are correct options. S3 for cold storage. FSx for Lustre. D option will not correct here because Windows OS isn't specified.

cold storage is actually provided with EBS not EFS. so There is not EBS option then we can go with S3 as cold storage

I think B and D. There needs to be consistency, either use file store or object store(S3).

Explanation: Amazon FSx for Lustre provides a high-performance file system optimized for fast processing of workloads such as machine learning, high-performance computing (HPC), video processing, financial modeling, and electronic design automation (EDA). These workloads commonly require data to be presented via a fast and scalable file system interface, and typically have data sets stored on long-term data stores like Amazon S3.
