Exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate SAA-C02 topic 1 question 46 discussion

A company's production application runs online transaction processing (OLTP) transactions on an Amazon RDS MySQL DB instance. The company is launching a new reporting tool that will access the same data. The reporting tool must be highly available and not impact the performance of the production application.
How can this be achieved?

  • A. Create hourly snapshots of the production RDS DB instance.
  • B. Create a Multi-AZ RDS Read Replica of the production RDS DB instance.
  • C. Create multiple RDS Read Replicas of the production RDS DB instance. Place the Read Replicas in an Auto Scaling group.
  • D. Create a Single-AZ RDS Read Replica of the production RDS DB instance. Create a second Single-AZ RDS Read Replica from the replica.

If answer C confuses you, know that RDS is a managed service and AWS handles the scaling part. You don't get to choose an ASG.

Multi-AZ mainly for high availability which is not the concern in this question. This question asking about scalability therefore, Read Replica is a valid option. https://aws.amazon.com/rds/features/read-replicas/ To add read-replicas into auto-scaling group, search "Add replica auto scaling" in https://aws.amazon.com/getting-started/hands-on/aurora-autoscaling-with-readreplicas/

replica ASG is only for Aurora DB, here the question is using "Amazon RDS MySQL DB".

I think you wrong. According to what is mentionned as requirement at the ned of the question, the high availability is the concern.

Once you see high availability, think Application load balancer, Autoscaling group and multi-AZ

Explanation: You can create a read replica as a Multi-AZ DB instance. Amazon RDS creates a standby of your replica in another Availability Zone for failover support for the replica. Creating your read replica as a Multi-AZ DB instance is independent of whether the source database is a Multi-AZ DB instance. CORRECT: "Create a Multi-AZ RDS Read Replica of the production RDS DB instance" is the correct answer. INCORRECT: "Create a Single-AZ RDS Read Replica of the production RDS DB instance. Create a second Single-AZ RDS Read Replica from the replica" is incorrect. Read replicas are primarily used for horizontal scaling. The best solution for high availability is to use a Multi-AZ read replica. INCORRECT: "Create a cross-region Multi-AZ deployment and create a read replica in the second region" is incorrect as you cannot create a cross- region Multi-AZ deployment with RDS. INCORRECT: "Use Amazon Data Lifecycle Manager to automatically create and manage snapshots" is incorrect as using snapshots is not the best solution for high availability.

With Multi-AZ, the replication is SYNCHRONOUS, but for Read-Replica, the replication is ASYNCHRONOUS. So, now the replication is SYNCHRONOUS or ASYNCHRONOUS for Multi-AZ Read Replica?

Option A is wrong as hourly snapshots help provide backup and not reduce load Option C is wrong as RDS does not support Auto Scaling for Read Replicas. Option D is wrong as Single AZ Read Replica does not provide High Availability. B it is
