Exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate SAA-C02 topic 1 question 105 discussion

A company has an on-premises data center that is running out of storage capacity. The company wants to migrate its storage infrastructure to AWS while minimizing bandwidth costs. The solution must allow for immediate retrieval of data at no additional cost.
How can these requirements be met?

  • A. Deploy Amazon S3 Glacier Vault and enable expedited retrieval. Enable provisioned retrieval capacity for the workload.
  • B. Deploy AWS Storage Gateway using cached volumes. Use Storage Gateway to store data in Amazon S3 while retaining copies of frequently accessed data subsets locally.
  • C. Deploy AWS Storage Gateway using stored volumes to store data locally. Use Storage Gateway to asynchronously back up point-in-time snapshots of the data to Amazon S3.
  • D. Deploy AWS Direct Connect to connect with the on-premises data center. Configure AWS Storage Gateway to store data locally. Use Storage Gateway to asynchronously back up point-in-time snapshots of the data to Amazon S3.

Answer is B. C is wrong because they already running out of space at on-premises. So why would they store the data again loacally .

And also they want to reduce bandwith, by caching bandwith requirement reduces

You are storing the data locally for fast retrieval at no cost.

B is correct, the company wants to migrate its storage infrastructure to AWS.. so cached volume would be available on-premise..

B. Cached vol store data in S3 (freeing up local space), and retain a copy of frequently accessed data locally (immediate retrieval and minimizing bandwidth costs)

C and D are almost similar... Storage gwy is not the use case here.. it is Cached gwy as wants to keep data transfer costs low.

Selected Answer: D
D. The key to this is MINIMIZED BANDWITH COST, "rapid and cost-free data retrieval" A.. wrong because you pay for data retrieval from glacier. B&C...wrong .....is more expensive because data will go through internet. D. AWS Direct Connect is a networking service that provides an alternative to using the internet to connect to AWS. Using AWS Direct Connect, data that would have previously been transported over the internet is delivered through a private network connection between your facilities and AWS. In many circumstances, private network connections can reduce costs, increase bandwidth, and provide a more consistent network experience than internet-based connections. All AWS services, including Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), Amazon Virtual Private Cloud (VPC), Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), and Amazon DynamoDB can be used with AWS Direct Connect.

Storage Gateway is a good option for this use case. B is the only one that don't duplicate / backup storage but moves it to the cloud.

B.cached volumes 'A' may have fast retrieval with 'Expedited'.(Expedited- 1-5 minutes ,standard- 3-5 hrs ,bulk- 5 hrs to1/2 day). But, we are not referring to infrequently accessed data in the question. And there are 'charges' for retrieval(Q says cost free data retrieval). Between B and C, both are referring to 'Volume' Gateways. Storage Gateways enable access to S3 bucket from on prem. Volume gateways are used for iscsi volumes/snapshots. Frankly,I would have chosen a normal File Storage GW as the volume GW are mainly for snapshots, not day to day content. Volume GW have 2 options, -Cached volumes: low latency access to most recent data, rest is on S3 bucket -Stored Volumes: entire data set is on prem, scheduled backups to S3 Since running out of space on-prem, Stored Volumes(C) and (D) ie store data locally are eliminated.
