A solutions architect is working on optimizing a legacy document management application running on Microsoft Windows Server in an on-premises data center.

What should the solutions architect do to meet these requirements?

However, the question neglects to tell us if the company is maintaining a hybrid architecture or just migrating data to AWS.

Selected Answer: A
https://aws.amazon.com/storagegateway/faqs/ it is clear File Gateway allows your existing file-based applications or devices to use secure and durable cloud storage without needing to be modified. With S3 File Gateway, your configured S3 buckets will be available as Network File System (NFS) mount points or Server Message Block (SMB) file shares.

Still unclear how A fits(though File GW supports SMB and NFS from on prem)---we have Windows based system, dont we want to preserve the filesystem(SMB/NTFS) when moved to Cloud?File GW target is S3 bucket. S3 is object based storage and FSx for Windows would have been the perfect file level storage solution. Further,Storage gw now has new type called FSx File GW ,perhaps a typo? B-works on NFS protocol(linux based) C-used to take volume backups from on prem to AWS S3 using snapshots. D-Block level storage Here is my comparison,S3 vs EFS vs EBS for reference:

Agreed. SGW FGW is backed by S3 objects. Why not Fsx FGW?

Letter A in my opnion. Focus is reduced cost, optimize cost, not eliminated onpremise, this case gateway local is good here.

B is ruled out because this is a migration question, which usually focus on either AWS Storage Gateway or AWS DataSynch. B and D are not migration tools, so its either A or C. C is ruled out because the question focus is on file shares (SMB) and not entire drives/volumes.
