Exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate SAA-C02 topic 1 question 329 discussion

A company uses on-premises servers to host its applications. The company is running out of storage capacity. The applications use both block storage and NFS storage. The company needs a high-performing solution that supports local caching without re-architecting its existing applications.
Which combination of actions should a solutions architect take to meet these requirements? (Choose two.)

  • A. Mount Amazon S3 as a file system to the on-premises servers.
  • B. Deploy an AWS Storage Gateway file gateway to replace NFS storage.
  • C. Deploy AWS Snowball Edge to provision NFS mounts to on-premises servers.
  • D. Deploy an AWS Storage Gateway volume gateway to replace the block storage.
  • E. Deploy Amazon Elastic Fife System (Amazon EFS) volumes and mount them to on-premises servers.

Answer is B and D. https://aws.amazon.com/storagegateway/file/ File Gateway provides a seamless way to connect to the cloud in order to store application data files and backup images as durable objects in Amazon S3 cloud storage. File Gateway offers SMB or NFS-based access to data in Amazon S3 with local caching. It can be used for on-premises applications, and for Amazon EC2-based applications that need file protocol access to S3 object storage. https://aws.amazon.com/storagegateway/volume/ Volume Gateway presents cloud-backed iSCSI block storage volumes to your on-premises applications. Volume Gateway stores and manages on-premises data in Amazon S3 on your behalf and operates in either cache mode or stored mode. In the cached Volume Gateway mode, your primary data is stored in Amazon S3, while retaining your frequently accessed data locally in the cache for low latency access.

B & D because they support local caching, EFS does not do so.

Key: --> on-prem arch where storage capacity is going to exhaust --> usage of both block & NFS Requirements: High Performance with local caching without re-architecting solution Distractors: A/B/C A is completely wrong as s3 is a block storage and cannot be mounted as FS B is probably one of the reasonable solution but it is not better when we have EFS in the options for NFS mount command has an option of fsc – which enables local file caching, without changing NFS cache coherency, and reducing latencies so a distractor C is a migration service S3 service D/E D is the best solution for caching block storage data on prem and also backing up to AWS similarly as mentioned in point B it is the convenient solution for NFS local caching and storage

BD, Introducing AWS Storage Gateway AWS Storage Gateway is a hybrid cloud storage service that gives you on-premises access to virtually unlimited cloud storage. Customers use Storage Gateway to simplify storage management and reduce costs for key hybrid cloud storage use cases. These include moving backups to the cloud, using on-premises file shares backed by cloud storage, and providing low latency access to data in AWS for on-premises applications. To support these use cases, the service provides four different types of gateways – Tape Gateway, Amazon S3 File Gateway, Amazon FSx File Gateway, and Volume Gateway – that seamlessly connect on-premises applications to cloud storage, caching data locally for low-latency access.

I think the answer is D & E Without re-architecting for NFS we can use NFS read_ahead_kb for the caching in EFS https://docs.aws.amazon.com/efs/latest/ug/performance-tips.html

There is no way you mount an EFS on to on-premise server. So E is wrong.

AWS EFS sounds like it can only be available to on premise host via AWS Direct Connect or AWS VPN. None of these are options that are listed. Please see this resource https://aws.amazon.com/efs/and listen to the video... B and D seem like the best options here
