Exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate SAA-C02 topic 1 question 420 discussion

A company has an on-premises business application that generates hundreds of files each day. These files are stored on an SMB file share and require a low- latency connection to the application servers. A new company policy states all application-generated files must be copied to AWS. There is already a VPN connection to AWS.
The application development team does not have time to make the necessary code modifications to move the application to AWS.
Which service should a solutions architect recommend to allow the application to copy files to AWS?

  • A. Amazon Elastic File System (Amazon EFS)
  • B. Amazon FSx for Windows File Server
  • C. AWS Snowball
  • D. AWS Storage Gateway

D - storage gateway. My take: D - The files will be on the storgare gateway with low latency and copied to AWS as a second copy. FSx in AWS will not provide low latency for the on prem apps over a vpn to the FSx file system.

Similar question was on my test that I passed on Nov 20 2021. Question had EFS file share and a need to migrate to AWS cloud. Options were EFS, Storage Gateway, Snowball and FsX for Windows. I picked Storage Gateway. Roughly half of the questions are from this 500 examtopics dump. But other half were unheard of new and lengthy ones in my test. Some of those questions had similarities but had twisted options. Good luck ya'll.

Storage gateway to access which type of share? You will still end up using FSx for Windows with FSx File GW. The fact that VPN has been established means SGW over internet is not even required. The 2 ways of accessing FSx for Windows are via VPN/Direct Connect or SGW. Answer is B, deploy FSx for windows file server and mount these directly, thanks to established VPN.

FSX will work fine only when you have a low-latency VPN connection, otherwise no.

Could this not be the case? If D is correct above B then why did they specify 'A VPN connection to AWS is already established' in the question?

Selected Answer: D
The question is asking for a service which enables the organization to transfer files to AWS. FSX is a file sharing service, so the transferred files might end up in FSX, but it is not the service for transferring files. Since it is mentioned that we need a service for transferring SMB files, the exact answer would be File Gateway, which is a type of Storage Gateway. So, D is the correct answer.

- FSx for Windows File Server and Storage Gateway (FSx File Gateway) are valid options, and both support the SMB protocol - Questions asks for "file transfer", which Storage Gateway is better for - FSx is more of "file system in the cloud", which may require application-level code changes, as the local and remote file servers do not automatically sync like FQW does

There is no mention about Windows OS - given that and they need to migrate the files over to AWS, it would be storage gateway

The fact that it says SMB it doesn’t mean it’s a Windows Machine. As far as I know SMB can be used also on Linux and Mac so FSX may not be the right solution if the OS is not Windows. Also, they already have data on a storage so what is needed is to use Storage Gateway to sync that on-premise content to AWS. D is my take.

Both B and D seems to be correct and will work For support of D: AWS Storage Gateway is a hybrid cloud storage service that gives you on-premises access to virtually unlimited cloud storage. Storage Gateway provides a standard set of storage protocols such as iSCSI, SMB, and NFS, which allow you to use AWS storage without rewriting your existing applications. It provides low-latency performance by caching frequently accessed data on premises, while storing data securely and durably in Amazon cloud storage services. Storage Gateway optimizes data transfer to AWS by sending only changed data and compressing data. Storage Gateway also integrates natively with Amazon S3 and Amazon FSx for Windows File Server cloud storage which makes your data available for in-cloud processing, For support of B https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/storage/accessing-smb-file-shares-remotely-with-amazon-fsx-for-windows-file-server/ Not sure which one to pick

I believe the answer here is B. Because of this link. https://aws.amazon.com/fsx/windows/faqs/ Q: How does Amazon FSx support access from my on-premises environment? A: Yes, you can access Amazon FSx file systems from your on-premises environment using an AWS Direct Connect or AWS VPN connection between your on-premises datacenter and your Amazon VPC. With support for AWS Direct Connect, Amazon FSx allows you to access your file system over a dedicated network connection from your on-premises environment. With support for AWS VPN, Amazon FSx allows you to access your file system from your on-premises devices over a secure and private tunnel. Why setting up an AWS storage gateway when you can do the job with what you have (VPN). In addition, the question mentions that “The application development team does not have time to make the necessary code modifications to move the application to AWS.”

it requires low latency. VPN does not meet this requirement, thus you need to have storage gateway on premises with a cache.

D - - Storage Gateway enables you to reduce your on-premises storage footprint and associated costs by leveraging AWS cloud storage services. - The Amazon S3 File Gateway enables you to store and retrieve objects in Amazon S3 using file protocols such as Network File System (NFS) and Server Message Block (SMB). Objects written through S3 File Gateway can be directly accessed in S3.

For on-premise Storage Gateway is required. The answer should be "D". But FSx also have FSx file gateway this may be use for this scenario https://aws.amazon.com/storagegateway/file/fsx/ The answer would be B or D ... , Problem is B is not talking about FSx file gateway. So, B is not the answer. I select D - Storage Gateway
