Exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate SAA-C02 topic 1 question 498 discussion

A company runs a fleet of web servers using an Amazon RDS for PostgreSQL DB instance. After a routine compliance check, the company sets a standard that requires a recovery point objective (RPO) of less than 1 second for all its production databases.
Which solution meets these requirements?

  • A. Enable a Multi-AZ deployment for the DB instance.
  • B. Enable auto scaling for the DB instance in one Availability Zone.
  • C. Configure the DB instance in one Availability Zone, and create multiple read replicas in a separate Availability Zone.
  • D. Configure the DB instance in one Availability Zone, and configure AWS Database Migration Service (AWS DMS) change data capture (CDC) tasks.

A is correct. Multi-AZ is using synchronous replication ensuring less than 1s RPO. Read replicas are assynchronous with lag up to 5 minutes in postgresql RDS

'less than 1s RPO' how can you prove it? Any docs?

https://aws.amazon.com/rds/features/multi-az/ Here it says 60 seconds automatic failover duration for multi AZ with one standby, and 35 seconds for two readable standbys. 1s RPO does not seem to be right. Now let's look at this: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/database/implementing-a-disaster-recovery-strategy-with-amazon-rds/ It says that RPO and RTO is being measured by hour. So, less than 1 hour RPO and RTO still means 0. Given that, A seems to be the right answer

Read "https://aws.amazon.com/rds/features/multi-az/#:~:text=In%20an%20Amazon%20RDS%20Multi,standby%20instance%20without%20manual%20intervention." It state ZERO data loss... doesn't that achieved 1s RPO?

A is correct. The question mentions about "Production Environment". The RDS Multi-AZ configuration is the recommended approach for production environments due to its ability to support low RTO (recovery time objective) and RPO (recovery point objective) requirements.

Read replicas are for off loading read requests from main db and not for Failover. Situation asks for failover (RPO) so A (Multi AZ) is the correct ans.

A Because Multi-AZ uses sync replication which means that the write will happen on active and standby instances at the same time

IMO: Multi-AZ RPO is zero: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/database/managed-disaster-recovery-with-amazon-rds-for-sql-server-using-cross-region-automated-backups/#:~:text=Amazon%20RDS%20Multi,0
