Exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate SAA-C02 topic 1 question 247 discussion

A company is building a document storage application on AWS. The application runs on Amazon EC2 instances in multiple Availability Zones. The company requires the document store to be highly available. The documents need to be returned immediately when requested. The lead engineer has configured the application to use Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) to store the documents, but is willing to consider other options to meet the availability requirement.
What should a solutions architect recommend?

  • A. Snapshot the EBS volumes regularly and build new volumes using those snapshots in additional Availability Zones.
  • B. Use Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) for the EC2 instance root volumes. Configure the application to build the document store on Amazon S3.
  • C. Use Amazon Elastic Block Store (Amazon EBS) for the EC2 instance root volumes. Configure the application to build the document store on Amazon S3 Glacier.
  • D. Use at least three Provisioned IOPS EBS volumes for EC2 instances. Mount the volumes to the EC2 instances in a RAID 5 configuration.

B. EFS would have worked best if we wanted to keep 'file' structure storage./no option here Documents can go on S3 as objects. EBS DOES support multiple instance(EBS Multi Attach) we configure as io1/io2/io2 block express. BUT EBS does not work cross AZ--so A,D eliminated. C is out because we need it to be 'returned quickly' Glacier has retrieval process Expedited:1-5 minutes Standard:3-5 hours Bulk:5 hrs-1/2 day Quick comparison from my notes9EBS vs EFS vs S3) https://1drv.ms/x/s!Al2WmWQmp2xZtmeDzRWwXycUnh_o

RAID 5 and RAID 6 are not recommended for Amazon EBS because the parity write operations of these RAID modes consume some of the IOPS available to your volumes. [...] RAID 1 is also not recommended for use with Amazon EBS. RAID 1 requires more Amazon EC2 to Amazon EBS bandwidth than non-RAID configurations because the data is written to multiple volumes simultaneously. In addition, RAID 1 does not provide any write performance improvement. https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AWSEC2/latest/UserGuide/raid-config.html
