Exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Associate SAA-C02 topic 1 question 560 discussion

A company receives data from millions of users totaling about 1 ׀¢׀’ each day. The company provides its users with usage reports going back 12 months. All usage data must be stored for at least 5 years to comply with regulatory and auditing requirements.

  • B. Store the data in Amazon S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access (S3 One Zone-IA). Set a lifecycle rule to transition the data to S3 Glacier after 1 year. Set the lifecycle rule to delete the data after 5 years.
  • C. Store the data in Amazon S3 Standard. Set a lifecycle rule to transition the data to S3 Standard-Infrequent Access (S3 Standard-IA) after 1 year. Set a lifecycle rule to delete the data after 5 years.
  • D. Store the data in Amazon S3 Standard. Set a lifecycle rule to transition the data to S3 One Zone-Infrequent Access (S3 One Zone-IA) after 1 year. Set a lifecycle rule to delete the data after 5 years.

A: 1. the data needs to be archived(5 years); 2. After 12months it doesnt need to be used which makes C incorrect. C is suitable for infrequently accessed data which still requires milli second access when required. The used case did not mentioned that the data will need quick access so better to move it to a cheaper option: https://docs.aws.amazon.com/AmazonS3/latest/userguide/storage-class-intro.html#sc-infreq-data-access

https://aws.amazon.com/s3/pricing/ B would be right if Glacier Deep Archive was mentioned, but it just says Glacier. S3 Glacier (formerly) is now S3 Glacier Flexible Retrieval which is almost 4 times more expensive than the glacier deep archive. The standard infrequent access' price is almost half of the standard, and just for one year. So, if we do the math, the right answer would be C, even though it is going to be more expensive for the first year.

And my horrible mistake is that I said C, even though I meant A :D So, the A is the cheapest, even though it is more expensive for the first year :D

A is the correct Answer. B is not correct , Because we need to store in S3 standard for 30 days ,then only we can shift to S3 one zone IA.

S3 glacier deep archive is cheaper than standard glacier. Also you would want data to be easily accessible so it's best to store data into standard S3 than S3 infrequent access. Answer therefore should be A.

I think we should not choose C since the sentence "The firm delivers use records for the last 12 months to its customers." implies a certain usage during this period rather than having "infrequent access" or "storing for backup and being ready for emergency " which provided by S3 infrequent Access One Zone
