Exam AWS Certified Solutions Architect - Professional topic 1 question 998 discussion

A company needs to migrate two individual applications from on premises to AWS:

• The first application is a legacy custom application that is hosted on a physical Windows server. The application source code is no longer available. The application has little documentation, has hardcoded operating system configuration settings, and is used by an external third party.
• The second application is an IBM Db2 database that is hosted on a single Linux VM that uses network-attached storage (NAS) to store the database data. The company uses this database internally for employee records.

The applications are hosted in a data center that the company plans to decommission in 90 days. Where possible, the company must use managed AWS services.

Which actions for migration should a solutions architect recommend to meet these requirements? (Choose two.)

  • A. Migrate the Windows server with the legacy application to Amazon EC2 by using AWS Application Migration Service (CloudEndure Migration).
  • B. Migrate the Linux VM with the IBM Db2 database service to an Amazon EC2 instance by using AWS Application Migration Service (CloudEndure Migration).
  • C. Migrate the Windows server with the legacy application to Amazon EC2 by using AWS Server Migration Service (AWS SMS).
  • D. Migrate the IBM Db2 database data to Amazon RDS for MySQL by using AWS Database Migration Service (AWS DMS) and the AWS Schema Conversion Tool replication agent.
  • E. Migrate the IBM Db2 database data to Amazon RDS for MySQL by using AWS DataSync and the AWS Schema Conversion Tool data extraction agent.

AWS Server Migration Service was discontinued on On March 31, 2022 so, option C is incorrect for Windows migration. For DB migration, we need to choose a managed service as per the requirement so, option D is the right choice.

AB • Migrate the Linux VM with the IBM Db2 database service to an Amazon EC2 instance by using AWS Application Migration Service (CloudEndure Migration)https://aws.amazon.com/products/migration-and-transfer/https://aws.amazon.com/application-migration-service/. This service can also migrate databases that run on physical or virtual servers to AWS. It replicates your source database server into a staging area in your AWS account without impacting performance or requiring any changes. It also converts your source database server to run natively on AWS by applying the appropriate drivers, agents, and configurations. You can then launch your fully functional database on AWS with minimal cutover windows

This is tricky. If there is application that cant be modified uses a db2 it is next to unpossible to just replace it with mysql database. The application will cease to work. Therefore we need need to keep DB2 and I go with A&B. My choice would be different if we should redesign or reconfigure the application to use another database.

Point is you might be able to migrate the data but you cannot make the application work with mysql.
