IKEv1 (Internet Key Exchange version 1) uses 6 packets to establish a secure connection in Main Mode. These packets are exchanged in three two-way exchanges (3 pairs of request/response packets): 1. First Exchange: Negotiation of security policies. 2. Second Exchange: Diffie-Hellman key exchange and generation of shared secret. 3. Third Exchange: Authentication and establishment of the IKE SA (Security Association). This totals 6 packets for the IKEv1 Main Mode.
