In the software-defined networking (SDN) architecture, the application layer is responsible for containing programs or applications that communicate their desired network behavior to the controllers. The applications in the SDN ecosystem define the network requirements and policies, specifying how the network should behave and handle traffic. These applications communicate with the controllers using northbound APIs to provide instructions and requirements for the underlying network infrastructure.
