A feasible successor must be present: A feasible successor is a neighboring router that satisfies the feasibility condition, which states that the advertised distance (Reported Distance) to a remote network from the neighboring router is less than the local router's feasible distance. The feasible successor provides an alternate path to reach the remote network without introducing loops.
The Reported Distance from a successor is lower than the local Feasible Distance: When a router receives advertisements from its neighbors, it compares the Reported Distance (advertised distance from the neighbor) to the local Feasible Distance (best path metric known so far). If the Reported Distance from a successor is lower than the local Feasible Distance, the router considers it as a feasible successor and maintains it as an alternate path.
