In a switched Ethernet network, when a switch receives a frame with an unknown destination MAC address (one that is not in its MAC address table), it will “flood” the frame. This means the switch will send the frame out of all ports except the one on which it was received. This flooding behavior allows the frame to reach its intended destination if the device is connected to one of the other ports. Once the destination device responds, the switch learns the MAC address and port association, adding it to its MAC address table to avoid flooding future frames destined for that MAC address.
