An automated solution is needed to configure VMs in numerous cloud provider environments to connect the environments to an SDWAN. The SDWAN edge VM is provided as an image in each of the relevant clouds and can be given an identity and all required configuration via cloud-init without needing to log into the VM once online.
Which configuration management and/or automation tooling is needed for this solution?

  • A. Ansible
  • B. Ansible and Terraform
  • C. NSO
  • D. Terraform

D Terraform. You don’t need Ansible because you don’t have to log into the devices and they’re bootstrapped by cloud init

This is the correct answer. Cisco SD-WAN Viptela do not need Ansible since you will get the cloud init from vManage and that you will pass to Terraform. No Ansible needed.

Selected Answer: B
The answer is B. Ansible and Terraform. Ansible is a configuration management tool that can be used to automate the configuration of VMs. Terraform is an infrastructure as code tool that can be used to automate the deployment of VMs in cloud provider environments. In this case, Ansible can be used to configure the SDWAN edge VMs with the necessary identity and configuration. Terraform can be used to deploy the SDWAN edge VMs in the cloud provider environments.

Selected Answer: B
I asked ChatGPT and it answered B: How confident are you in your answer? I am highly confident in my answer. Ansible and Terraform are both widely used tools in the industry for configuration management and infrastructure as code, respectively. They are both well-suited for automating the configuration of VMs in cloud environments and connecting them to an SDWAN. I provided a detailed explanation of how they can be used in the specific solution described, and I am sure they are the best fit.

You can't have faith in ChatGPT. I asked it as well and it said B. Then I said "People online seem split between B and D" to which it replied: Option D (Terraform) might indeed be a better choice if all required configurations can be fully and effectively managed through cloud-init. This approach simplifies the architecture by reducing the number of tools and processes involved. Considering this perspective and the operational simplicity it offers: If the setup truly requires no post-deployment interaction and all configurations are handled by cloud-init, Option D (Terraform) could be considered the correct choice.

"Terraform is the correct answer: When you create a generic compute resource in Terraform, your virtual machine (VM) may not have much capability because it is a ""fresh"" install and needs to be provisioned with the software you want to use. Manually installing the necessary software and its respective dependencies on each VM is time consuming and difficult to maintain at scale. cloud-init is a standard configuration support tool available on most Linux distributions and all major cloud providers. cloud-init allows you to pass a shell script to your instance that installs or configures the machine to your specifications. https://learn.hashicorp.com/tutorials/terraform/cloud-init"

D is probably the best answer, although I'm sure you could get it done with Ansible for most cloud providers as well.
