Therefore, it is commonly recommended to try to avoid overloading an ABR and instead spread the areas over several routers (previously, it was recommended to have up to three areas per ABR). However, practical designs require only a few routers to serve as multi- area ABRs, and these routers can be upgraded to the latest hardware to support 50 and more areas per ABR.
