Exam 400-007 topic 1 question 1 discussion

Actual exam question from Cisco's 400-007
Question #: 1
Topic #: 1
[All 400-007 Questions]

Company XYZ is planning to deploy primary and secondary (disaster recovery) data center sites. Each of these sites will have redundant SAN fabrics and data protection is expected between the data center sites. The sites are 100 miles (160 km) apart and target RPO/RTO are 3 hrs and 24 hrs, respectively. Which two considerations must Company XYZ bear in mind when deploying replication in their scenario? (Choose two.)

  • A. Target RPO/RTO requirements cannot be met due to the one-way delay introduced by the distance between sites.
  • B. VSANs must be extended from the primary to the secondary site to improve performance and availability.
  • C. VSANs must be routed between sites to isolate fault domains and increase overall availability.
  • D. Synchronous data replication must be used to meet the business requirements.
  • E. Asynchronous data replication should be used in this scenario to avoid performance impact in the primary site.

C. VSANs must be routed between sites to isolate fault domains and increase overall availability. VSANs must be routed between sites to isolate fault domains and increase overall availability. This improves the reliability and manageability of the SAN fabric. E. Asynchronous data replication should be used in this scenario to avoid performance impact in the primary site. Since the distance between the sites is 100 miles (160 km), asynchronous replication is better suited to avoid performance impact due to the latency caused by synchronous replication. Asynchronous replication can efficiently meet the 3-hour and 24-hour RPO/RTOs without impacting performance at the primary site. These considerations allow Company XYZ to meet its data protection goals while maintaining performance and availability.

No need for synchronous replication with this RPO/RTO. And VSAN can be routed to isolate the domain failures.

This is cisco VSAN, not VMware VSAN. Cisco VSAN can be routed with IVR feature.

There is no reason to extend VSANs, that's not how redundant Storage Area Networks (SANs) are built. They must be completely independent for fault isolation. So VSANs are routed. Since RPO is 3 hours and RTO is 24 hours, 3 hours is enough for async replication to complete (we don't have data volume, but the point here is that it's in hours, not in minutes/seconds). And RTO - time to recover - 24 hours is also large enough to recover using data from another datacenter.

Changing my answer to CE C. VSANs must be routed between sites to isolate fault domains and increase overall availability. This is true. Routing VSANs (Virtual Storage Area Networks) between sites allows for isolation of fault domains. If a problem arises in one site, it won't necessarily affect the other, hence increasing overall availability.

BE is correct. I am not voting D because there is no need for synchronous replication. RPO/RTO is long enough to accomodate Async replication.

A. Conflict with other answers B. Correct. Using layer 2 links to form vSphere cluster with remote site C. Incorrect. vSphere cannot form cluster in different subnets then cannot use VSAN. D. Requirement don't need so tight. E. Correct. Asyn replication can be done hourly to fulfill 3 hrs RPO. D.

I also select BE. This link https://docs.vmware.com/en/VMware-vSphere/7.0/com.vmware.vsphere.vsan-planning.doc/GUID-031F9637-EE29-4684-8644-7A93B9FD8D7B.html talk about vSAN 6.6 and later releases support support the vSAN cluste over unicast but running earlier versions still need multicast. This link https://blog.purestorage.com/purely-informational/synchronous-replication-vs-aynchronous-replication/ talk about Asyn recplication usage scenario:work over long distances and storage snapshots for continuous data protection (data protection is expected in the question).

to meet the RPO/RTO requirements in this scenario, synchronous data replication should be used. Synchronous replication ensures that data is replicated immediately to the secondary site,

Options B and C are incorrect. VSANs (Virtual Storage Area Networks) are used to create logical storage areas within a data center environment, but they do not have an impact on data replication or performance. Option D, synchronous data replication must be used to meet the business requirements, is incorrect. As described above, asynchronous replication would be a better choice in this scenario due to the distance between the data center sites and the target RPO/RTO requirements. Option E, asynchronous data replication should be used in this scenario to avoid performance impact in the primary site, is correct. Asynchronous replication would allow Company XYZ to meet the target RPO/RTO requirements while avoiding the performance impact of synchronous replication.

I will go with C, D based on the requirements stated in the question. If the RPO is 3 hours, async will affect performance as the replication will even be done during business hours at most every 3 hours.
