Question #: 297
Topic #: 1
[All 350-501 Questions]

A company is expanding its existing office space to a new floor of the building, and the networking team is installing a new set of switches. The new switches are running IGMPv2, and the engineers configured them for VLAN10 only. The rest of the existing network includes numerous Layer 2 switches in multiple other
VLANs, all running IGMPv3. Which additional task must the team perform when deploying the new switches so that traffic is switched correctly through the entire network?

  • A. Configure the new switches to use IGMPv3 on all VLANs on the network.
  • B. Configure all switches on the network to support IGMPv2 and IGMPv3 on all VLANs on the network.
  • C. Configure the new switches to use IGMPv3 on VLAN10 only.
  • D. Configure all switches on the network to support IGMPv2 and IGMPv3 on VLAN10 only.

Answer could actually be D. It is very poorly formulated but option D doesn't mention "configure switches with IGMPv2 and IGMPv3" it just means that the switch should be configured so that it SUPPORTS IGMPv2 and IGMPv3. By having IGMPv3 for VLAN10 only, this would work. And the rest of the network as well. So I go with Option D

Selected Answer: C
IGMPv3 is backward compatible with IGMPv2, meaning that an IGMPv3-enabled switch can still communicate with IGMPv2 devices. Reference : https://www.ciscopress.com/articles/article.asp?p=2738463&seqNum=8

I didn't quite get the question "the new switches are running IGMPv2, and the engineers configured them for VLAN10 only." Which made me assume that VLAN 10 is configured only for IGMPv2. Then again, if I think that the new switches are configured for VLAN 10 only, then C is correct.

Selected Answer: C
If all the ports are in VLAN10 only, the only option here is C to configure IGMPv3 on those VLAN10 ports. You cannot configure more than one IGMP version.

the final question says: "... so traffic is switched correctly through the entire network?". I understand this question like you and I think we should configure IGMPv3 on all VLANs of the network, so A is correct for me.
