the answer should be IGMPv3 with PIM-SSM. IGMP filtering only filter joins to multicast group address , not to reduce them

IGMPv3 increases the number of states due the S,G as opposed to *,G

IGMPv3+SSM filters unnecessary packets and in this way the states are less

I would vote more for 'D' as The IGMP filtering features will work only if IGMP snooping is enabled (either on the interface or globally). https://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/general/Test/dwerblo/broken_guide/igmpfilt.html#wp1086071

Actually, I guess it depends on how you read this as according to the RFC, Version 3 of IGMP adds support for "source filtering", that is, the ability for a system to report interest in receiving packets *only* from specific source addresses, or from *all but* specific source addresses, sent to a particular multicast address. https://datatracker.ietf.org/doc/html/rfc3376

PIM-SSM will eliminate *,G at all. S,G is anyway needed for client subscription on top of *,G which is not needed in SSM.

I vote for C. Because the question is for IGMP state, not limit the version. and IGMP Filter should work on any IGMP version. IGMPv3 with PIM-SSM only works for IGMPv3, then it should not help on IGMPv1 and v2. https://forum.networklessons.com/t/igmp-filter/1343/2

Best explanation i think is: An IGMPv3 Report message can carry multiple groups, whereas an IGMPv1 or IGMPv2 Report message can carry only one group. IGMPv3 greatly reduces the number of messages transmitted on a network. I still vote D like others, just dnt really agree with their explanation as to why it would reduce state messages on the network.

IGMPv3 is an updated version of IGMP that allows for source-specific multicast (SSM), which means that hosts can specify the multicast group they want to join along with the source of the multicast traffic. This allows for more precise control over multicast group memberships and reduces the amount of IGMP state needed, as only the specific source-group combinations that are of interest need to be maintained.
