An administrator is troubleshooting a RAID issue in a failed server. The server reported a drive failure, and then it crashed and would no longer turn on. There are two arrays on the failed server: a two-drive RAID 0 set for the OS, and an eight-drive RAID 10 set for data.

Which of the following failure scenarios MOST likely occurred?

  • A. A drive failed in the OS array.

Selected Answer: A
The RAID 0 (striping without parity) set for the OS is not fault tolerant. If a drive fails here, the OS cannot recover. The RAID 10 set for data has Mirroring (RAID 1) and Striping (RAID 0) which is fault tolerant. If a drive fails here, the data can fully recover.

Selected Answer: A
crashing and failing to boot could be an OS or BIOS issue but since this is focused on raid array config failures, the answer has the be the OS array failing causing the system to not boot. If it were an issue with the Raid 10 Array, the system would boot and you would not see the data in the OS. We do not have enough to confirm that they both failed as well.
