Actual exam question from CompTIA's 220-1101
Question #: 219
Topic #: 1
[All 220-1101 Questions]

A user has decided to build a new computer with parts purchased from a popular online vendor. The user has referenced online resources to assemble the unit. However, when the user presses the power button, the new computer does not load the operating system's installer. Instead, the onboard speaker beeps and immediately reports an issue on the screen. Which of the following is the MOST likely issue with the new build?

  • A. The user did not plug in the processor's fan.
  • B. The user did not apply thermal paste to the CPU.
  • C. The user did not seat the GPU correctly.
  • D. The user did not install the power supply.

Here is how you will pass your exam. You need to filter out the bad options. For example, it couldn't be C because the user is able to see a report on the screen showing an issue on the screen. I couldn't be D because if the user doesn't install the power supply properly, the computer wont turn on. The options that we could think about as potential answers are A and B. Now, in the case of A, you will get an error on the screen saying something like not fan is detected but in this case its related to building a PC and its well known that if you don't apply thermal paste, your CPU will overheat and fail similarly to not using the CPU fan at all. You need to filter the bad answers out.

you may be correct, but it is not a clue if you have to assume because with Comptia you never assume! you just analyze the givens and weigh the answers.

C The symptoms suggest the system successfully powers on and attempts to POST (Power-On Self-Test), as indicated by the onboard speaker beeping and displaying an error on the screen. If the GPU is not seated properly, the system may fail to initialize video output correctly, which would result in a beep code and an error on the screen. This is a common issue in new builds.

Nope, going to A If the user is using that video card, then he wouldn't be able to see a report on the screen in case of the "C. The user did not seat the GPU correctly."

Selected Answer: C
C. The user did not seat the GPU correctly. Explanation: If the computer is beeping and displaying an error message on the screen when powered on, it is likely that a hardware component, such as the GPU, is not properly seated. Incorrect GPU installation is a common cause of errors during the boot process, especially in builds that rely on dedicated graphics cards. This would prevent the system from initializing properly, potentially triggering a POST (Power-On Self-Test) error. A (Processor's fan not plugged in) and B (Thermal paste not applied) would typically result in the system shutting down due to overheating, but this is less likely to cause a POST error at startup. D (Power supply not installed) would prevent the system from turning on altogether, so this is less likely since the system powers on and reports an error.

Selected Answer: A
The computer will not tell you on POST that you don't have thermal paste applied. However, it WILL tell you that you do not have a processor fan plugged in, just like it would tell you "no keyboard detected" or something similar. If you had no thermal paste, the computer would run normally for a few seconds and then shut off without warning. The other options are simply not possible, because nothing would be displayed on the screen.

Selected Answer: A
If the computer does not start at all and the onboard speaker beeps while displaying an issue on the screen, it indicates a hardware problem or an issue during the boot process. The absence of thermal paste would not directly cause this type of behavior.

Selected Answer: A
Based on the provided information, the most likely issue with the new build is option A: The user did not plug in the processor's fan. When the onboard speaker beeps and immediately reports an issue on the screen, it indicates a hardware problem during the Power-On Self-Test (POST) process. The processor's fan is a critical component that ensures proper cooling of the CPU, and if it is not properly connected or not functioning, the motherboard may detect it as an issue and halt the boot process. While the other options (B, C, and D) could also cause problems in a new build, the absence of the processor's fan connection is the most common cause for immediate errors during the boot process. It is crucial to ensure the processor's fan is correctly plugged in and operating to prevent overheating and potential damage to the CPU.

You are definitely wrong. If the user is using that video card, then he wouldn't be able to see a report on the screen in case of the "C. The user did not seat the GPU correctly."
