A user built a new PC with parts sourced from a popular online vendor. The system boots to the OS and basic browsing works, but whenever the user opens a 4K video or starts to play a game, the system immediately shuts down. Which of the following is the MOST likely cause of this issue?

  • A. The video card was installed in the wrong PCIe slot
  • B. The CPU heat sink was attached without adequate thermal paste
  • C. The SSD drives do not have enough Pagefile
  • D. The system does not have enough RAM for 4K video

Selected Answer: B
Thermal paste is a substance that fills in any gaps between a CPU and its heat sink, which is a device that dissipates heat from the CPU. Without adequate thermal paste, the CPU may overheat and cause the system to shut down automatically to prevent damage. This is especially likely when running 4K video or games, which are more demanding and generate more heat. The technician should check if the CPU heat sink was attached properly and apply enough thermal paste to ensure good contact and heat transfer. The most likely cause of the immediate shutdown when running demanding tasks like 4K video or gaming is B. The CPU heat sink was attached without adequate thermal paste. Insufficient thermal paste can lead to overheating of the CPU, which can trigger automatic shutdowns to prevent damage. Here's why the other options are less likely: A. The video card was installed in the wrong PCIe slot: While this could cause performance issues or compatibility problems, it's less likely to cause immediate shutdowns. C. The SSD drives do not have enough Pagefile: Pagefile is used for virtual memory, which is less critical for tasks like 4K video playback and gaming. D. The system does not have enough RAM for 4K video: Insufficient RAM could lead to performance issues and stuttering, but it's unlikely to cause immediate shutdowns. Therefore, the technician should first check the CPU's thermal paste application and ensure it's properly seated with adequate thermal paste. GG

I think its B. The other answers just are not correct. B while unlikey in my expereince is at least possibel. Not enough RAM = Slow computer. No room for paging file = Slow Computer. Graphics card somehow (not even sure how that could actually happen!) in wrong slot = No graphics.

A silvery-gray substance that you apply to a processor before installing a cooling solution. It allows for an efficient transfer of heat from the IHS of the processor to the base plate or water block of the CPU cooler that is designed to dissipate that heat.

Among all four choices, B is the closest one. In reality, I will check the power supply first since overheating CPU takes longer time to shutdown than lack of power

The system works until 4k video is turned on then it goes off immediately. correct me if am wrong shouldn't D be the answer. I believe the B answer will allow the 4k video start but goes off after a while, the immediate switching off of the system to me points to RAM

I was thinking this too, but the cpu probably spikes in temp fairly quickly when using 4k video or gaming. So it probably does shut down what feels like immediately.

that's why I would go with A, CPU overheating will not happen immediately. This could be short circuit by not installing GPU card correctly
