A company is recycling old hard drives and wants to quickly reprovision the drives for reuse. Which of the following data destruction methods should the company use?
While C would be a more secure method for ensuring data is not retained, B is substantially faster and the question is asking for speed. If the question asked which is the best method for ensuring the data is wiped it would be C, but that is not the question.
Purpose of Standard Formatting
Standard/High-level formatting is setting up an empty file system on a disk partition or a logical volume and, for PCs, installing a boot sector. Often a fast operation and is sometimes referred to as quick formatting.
Purpose of Low-level wiping of a disk drive
Low-level wiping, also known as zero filling, involves writing zeros across an entire hard disk drive. It's a permanent deletion process that can be used for various reasons, including:
Removing viruses: Destroying the boot sector can eliminate viruses that can't be removed otherwise.
Switching operating systems: Completely removing everything from the drive when switching between OSes.
Erasing confidential data: Permanently deleting sensitive information for privacy purposes.
Scanning for bad sectors: Identifying and replacing bad sectors with good ones while writing to the sectors.
Low-level wiping can also help identify bad sectors and allow the hard drive to reallocate them. However, it makes any previous data unrecoverable
C
Low-level formatting, also known as low-level wiping, is a process that prepares a hard drive by erasing all data and rebuilding its sectors and tracks. The goal is to ensure the drive is clean and free of any defects or leftover data.
Answer is B-standard formatting, as they need to be reprovisioned quickly. low level formatting will overwrite the disks with individual bits, zeroing it out. takes a while
based on what professor messer said, "low-level" formatting/wiping happens at a factory. standard formatting should work. yes technically it could mean quick or regular but its more likely than all the others.
Standard formatting is faster since the question imply on being quick. https://www.easeus.com/partition-master/high-level-format-vs-low-level-format.html
What Is Low-Level Format (LLF)? LLF (Low-level Format) of the hard drive is also known as “zero-filled” since it erases all the data from the storage and would replace it with zero-state bits. It will reset the state and the content of your hard disk by restoring it to its initial/factory state
Low-level wiping is a process that overwrites the entire hard drive with zeros or random data, making it impossible to recover any data from the drive. This method is more secure than standard formatting or deleting, which only remove the file system and directory information, leaving the data intact and recoverable using specialized software. For 1 TB drive it takes 2 hours 47 minutes.
