Yet another ambiguous question. Moving a laptop from one room to another causes this issue? That is completely stupid. They should have said that simply moving the laptop causes the issue. Saying that the issue occurs when going from one room to another just makes no sense at all and leaves the reader considering multiple factors. Who the hell writes these friggin' questions? Whoever it is, they should be fired.

I can imagine someone reporting their issue in this kind of wording e.g. "I just move it to that room and it keeps shutting down!"

I would go with B System overheating Given that the laptop shuts down unexpectedly only when it's moved from one room to another, it's likely that movement is causing issues with the laptop's cooling system. Movement could disrupt airflow or cause components such as fans or heat sinks to become dislodged, leading to overheating and subsequent shutdowns. Therefore, system overheating is the most probable cause of the issue. Not C Distended capacitors Distended or swollen capacitors on the motherboard can indeed cause various issues, including unexpected shutdowns. However, the symptoms described in the scenario—shutdowns occurring only when the laptop is moved from one room to another—do not directly suggest a problem with the capacitors. While distended capacitors can lead to system instability and malfunctions, the symptoms described are more indicative of a mechanical issue related to movement, such as system overheating. Therefore, while distended capacitors could be a potential cause of the issue, it is less likely than system overheating based on the provided information.

Selected Answer: C
It can't be a loose battery connection because it is already reseated. it is the distended capacitors when they move from one room to the other it might cause the electrical flow and shutdowns.

Question uses the term "shutdown" implying that the laptop goes into the shut down process. Both a "Loose battery connection" & "Overheating" would cause the laptop to just abruptly "Turn off". I think CompTIA is trying to make money off retakes by employing misleading wording in the exam questions. Nothing personal -strictly a business.

Answer D, however, the question should be worded better. The Jason Dion had the same type of question. Moving a laptop from room to room will help laptop to loose battery connections

Shocked how many people are confident in there wrong answers. It’s clearly loose battery cable. My laptop has a loose battery cable and so you know what happens when it’s moved? It turns off this has nothing to do with a cmos battery…

This is a very stupid question “A userג€™s laptop is *“shutting down unexpectedly”*. The technician discovers the shutdowns only happen when the *“laptop is moved from one room to another”* When you see this question the first thing that comes your mind is “unexpected shutdowns” as the textbooks tell you.. caused by internal components over heating forcing the computer to power off, so other components wouldn’t get bad. Then they later say the laptop is moved from one room to another leaving you with one thing in mind, which is voltage issues... Seriously CompTIA should work in their Question setting skills because it’s really terrible, they just want someone to fail a question for no good reason?

Correct Answer is CMOS battery failure. How do I know my CMOS battery failed? Here are the CMOS battery failure symptoms: The laptop has difficult booting up There’s a constant beeping noise from the motherboard The date and time have reset Peripherals aren’t responsive or they don’t respond correctly Hardware drivers have disappeared You can’t connect to the internet When your CMOS battery fails, your BIOS firmware will shut down and revert to its default settings [3]. Boot up problems and incessant beeping As we mentioned previously, BIOS is largely responsible for booting up your computer. Without the battery, your laptop may have a very difficult time booting up or it may not boot up at all. You also might hear a constant beeping noise from the motherboard, another indication of a battery failure. https://www.hp.com/us-en/shop/tech-takes/what-is-cmos-battery-how-to-remove-and-replace Hope it helps.

so this would make sense if it stated that the laptop held no charge, otherwise even if the cord is loose it should switch to battery power or no

That wouldn't explain why the laptop only shuts down when the laptop is moved. Therefore it's a loose battery connection. When you move a laptop that will wiggle a little bit and results in not having power for a split second.

yup I agree even if the battery was reseated it specifically states that it only happens when it is being moved so if the battery even slightly slides it could power it off.

It is possible that whatever is holding the laptop battery is not secure enough to prevent it from losing connection even if you reseated the battery.
