Both NFC and IR need to be in close proximity...the difference it that IR need line of sight just like the IR for a TV remote and NFC you only have to be near the device such as your phone can be in another room from the other device but still close enough to locate each other.

A lot of people here are getting confused because question 2 on this site has an incorrect answer relating to the same topic. Please try to keep in mind the answers provided on this site are the "best guess" of whoever uploaded the questions and NOT official CompTIA answers. If you get an answer wrong on this site or don't understand why an answer is given it shows you what to go read up on. DO NOT take any of the answers here for granted as a lot of them are incorrect. If people link articles they've pulled answers from, read the article don't just take their word for it. If you expect there to be a site out there that will just give you the answers then you've missed the point of taking the exam in the first place. Understand the subject, don't memorise answers guys.....

The hole confusion is because Line-of-sight was mentioned, and if that is mentioned the possible answer will be Infrared, if LoS wasn’t mentioned the answer will be NFC, because it functions only in close proximity about 6-8mm if I am not mistaken.

the correct answer is D, IR (InfraRed) is using actual light pulses to transfer data. This is going to require a Line of Sight in order for the sensor to read the pulses of light. NFC does not require Line of sight but each device needs to be closer to each other to transmit/receive. You can hold two NFC devices back to back and get data transfer but you can't do the same with IR.

Okay Exam takers.... Please try to understand the technologies referenced in the question before just blindly answering. IR (InfraRed) is using actual light pulses to transfer data. This is going to require a Line of Sight in order for the sensor to read the pulses of light. NFC does not require Line of sight but each device needs to be closer to each other to transmit/receive. IR is not really used for file transfers (by Professor Messer). NFC is the answer then.

The earlier drag and drop question about this has NFC and IR swapped. IR needs line of sight but NFC doesn't (it is omnidirectional and would still potentially function through a sheet of paper).

So if this is IR, doesn't that completely contradict the answer on the second question of this exam topic?

Yes, but the given answer to question 2 had NFC and IR flipped

"NFC lets you share data across two devices quickly without the hassle of pairing. Simply place the NFC detection areas of both your devices in close proximity to each other, and then you can transfer files and other data quickly between the two NFC-enabled devices." The answer is D there is no way this is A.

In the question it says in the line of sight, which means two phones are not close enough for NFC.
