During the initiation phase, a project manager has asked for a document containing the high-level objectives and goals for a project. Which of the following documents would contain these items?
Like many have said, a business case provides justification BUT it can also include options, strategies, and goals. A business case is part of a Project Charter, which is the final product of the Initiation phase. The Project Charter includes the business case, goals and objectives, high-level project information such as requirements, milestones, budget, etc. The best answer should be Project Charter, but since it's not here (CrapTIA style) I am going with Business Case.
Straight from the official CompTIA Student Guide pg 14 (PK0-004):
In the INITIATION phase, you have these Outputs:
- Project Purpose
- Goals and objectives
- Project charter
- Business case
These outputs are responsible for:
-Assignment of a project manager, management sponsor, functional manager, and user representative.
- Constraints and assumptions
- High-level scope definition
- High-level risks
There's no question, the answer is Business Case.
The ***high-level*** ***requirements document*** is part of the formal request for project approval. It is also the basis for defining the project scope, estimating the cost of the project, identifying the resources required, and developing the schedule. The high-level requirements should contain the following information:
1. Problem Statement
2. ***Objectives***:
How do you define project success?
What is the end result?
What are the deliverables leading to the end result?
***What are the goals?***
How are the goals measured?
3. Strategic Value
4. Requirements
5. Timing
6. Historical Data
Isn't the Requirement document part of the Planning phase? This question specifically refers to the Initiation phase...which leaves A.) Business Case as the most likely answer.
PM isn't creating the document, they are referencing it. It would have already been created in the planning phase, and would be available for review. I think that specific detail is a red herring.
Documenting high-level requirements
At the beginning of a project, not much is truly known about the ins and outs of the scope
of work, what things will cost, and how long the project will be. Yes, it is predictive, but it's
tough to predict everything at this point. That is why high-level requirements are made and
agreed upon, and why all projects are progressively elaborated on. Progressive
elaboration is a fancy term for go with what you know today and expand on that knowledge once
you have it. Elaborate progressively on scope, time, and cost as well as risk, quality, and
resources.
A business case provides justification for undertaking a project, programme or portfolio. It evaluates the benefit, cost and risk of alternative options and provides a rationale for the preferred solution
I lied, if you open up the comptia project plus objectives, if you go to Initiation Phase, Business Case is a subtopic. So A has to be the answer. The BDR comes in the Planning Phase.
I think its B! Business Case is the "why" or "justification" as to why we should do it. The BRD( Business Requirements Document) describe the characteristics of the goals or deliverables that must be met in order to satisfy the needs of the project.
The best answer is requirements document. This document typically start out high level and are further defined, or progressively elaborated, as the project progresses. As illustrated in the Comptia Project + Guide.
