"Patching" because malware has been "sent", so patching the target software/system with fixed code can block the effects of malware.

The idea here is that by keeping the system updated with the latest patches, you are doing the best you can to fix any vulnerability in the O/S (or software) that the malware might exploit. That is regardless of any other protection measure you may have implemented.
