Actual exam question from CompTIA's N10-007
Question #: 143
Topic #: 1
[All N10-007 Questions]

A network administrator is testing connectivity at a new corporate site. The site has a wireless guest as well as a wired employee network. After verifying connectivity, the administrator checks link speeds by using a speed testing website. The speed testing website shows lower download and upload speeds for the wired network than the wireless network. Which of the following is the MOST likely explanation?

  • A. There is less local congestion on the wireless network
  • B. The testing server for the wired network was farther away
  • C. The firewall is configured to throttle traffic to specific websites
  • D. The wireless access points were misconfigured

I think B is still correct. When doing internet speed test, you can choose the location to send the test packets to, if the location is far from the host you will get lower speed than a closer one.

Yes, also the scenario presented never says that user's are having connectivity problems or low performance, he was most likely doing a speed test to do the baselines

I felt strongly towards A but the question doesn't give enough information in my opinion to give a correct answer. My reasoning was it' possible that the company has very few guests yet the companies employees are likely to be using up much of the available bandwidth.

I go with A. If B happens we have higher latency. If C happens it will be for all the devices on the network. A is closest to the right answer. When you observe lower download and upload speeds during a speed test, it's not due to the latency itself but could be attributed to other factors such as NETWORK CONGESTION, ISP LIMITATIONS, or issues with the test server. High latency can affect the responsiveness of your internet connection but doesn't directly impact the speed in terms of available bandwidth.

Okay, so here's why its not A (Even though I thought it was A until I read over the question and answer again for the fourth time.) Option A says: "There is less LOCAL congestion on the wireless network." the keyword is "LOCAL". The local congestion of a network will not effect communication from the router to the website. So yes the only answer left would have to be B because the other options make zero sense.

Yes, local network congestion can affect communication from the router to a speed testing website. Network congestion occurs when there's too much traffic on the network, which can lead to slower data transfer speeds and longer wait times for users. This is because when a network is congested, data packets can take longer to travel to and from their destination, including a speed testing website.

Just ran 3 speed tests from 3 different server locations... all were about the same speed. Gotta go with the wired network being congested.

I think "A" is the correct answer! Hopefully, CompTIA agrees!

Once again another ridiculous question. The most logical answer should be A.

"The site has a wireless guest as well as a wired employee network." That is the important line. A guest wireless is going to have less traffic than the wired employee. That's why they chose those two networks. Also, having a testing site farther away isn't going to change the speed, only the latency.

This answer is a joke. Nowhere does it say the site has more than one internet line. I believe the answer is D. Misconfigured APs will definitely lower the speed.

Nevermind. I misread the question. B still makes no sense though. Then I'd rather go with A

Based on the question given. Wireless is faster than wired in terms of download and upload by using the speed test. Definitely A is the answer.

Nonsense. Distance affects latency, not speed. One connect to a satellite in orbit 22000 miles away and get tremendous download speeds but awful latency. A user in Chicago can have a terrible result 16 hops away to a congested server in New York, but max out speeds from a server in France due to a better path. The longer the route the higher the odds you run into a bottleneck, but that is hardly a given. A isn't even a good answer but more feasible that there is some sort of congestion on that switch/VLAN that the AP is somehow avoiding. D is a throwaway (the wireless is the one working better...); C would throttle both connections.

I would say A. https://www.speedtest.net/about/knowledge/faq#factors. "Devices (phones, tablets, PCs, etc…) can have very different Wi-Fi and cellular radio capabilities. This means you might get one Speedtest result on one device and a different result on another, even using the same provider. Some devices may not be able to measure the full speed of your internet service. It’s also possible that your Wi-Fi router doesn’t support the full speed of your service."

"Speedtest servers may perform differently. Generally, you will get faster speeds from servers closer to you. We recommend testing to a variety of test servers to get the most complete picture of your speed." Yup, it's A.

A for sure. The other one (further away test site!? LOL) is rather idiotic.

The answer S/B "A" We don't typically specify which site to use when performing speed tests...really? We just do it. Both wired and wireless tests are going to the same site. Chances are, there are less wireless guests than there are wired employees running tests. The wired tests are crowding the site. I would say the answer should be "A".

In my opinion, the answer must be: C. The firewall is configured to throttle traffic to specific websites Their answer doesn’t make any sense.
