Exam N10-008 topic 1 question 233 discussion

Actual exam question from CompTIA's N10-008
Question #: 233
Topic #: 1
[All N10-008 Questions]

A company rents out a large event space and includes wireless internet access for each tenant. Tenants reserve a two-hour window from the company each week, which includes a tenant-specific SSID. However, all users share the company's network hardware.
The network support team is receiving complaints from tenants that some users are unable to connect to the wireless network. Upon investigation, the support team discovers a pattern indicating that after a tenant with a particularly large attendance ends its sessions, tenants throughout the day are unable to connect.
The following settings are common to all network configurations:

Which of the following actions would MOST likely reduce this issue? (Choose two.)

  • A. Change to WPA encryption.
  • B. Change the DNS server to 10.1.10.1.
  • C. Change the default gateway to 10.0.0.1.
  • D. Change the DHCP scope end to 10.1.10.250.
  • E. Disable AP isolation.
  • F. Change the subnet mask to 255.255.255.192.
  • G. Reduce the DHCP lease time to four hours.

The issue occurring after a large number of attendance is an indication of running out of usable address space for user devices to have access to the network. DHCP gives access to these spaces through leases that can be adjusted for how many users need access & @ what time.

When GPT is asked the correct way, it picks (D) and (G): "The TWO actions that would MOST likely reduce the issue of tenants being unable to connect after a large attendance session are: (D) Change the DHCP scope end to 10.1.10.250 (G) Reduce the DHCP lease time to four hours Explanation: (D) Change the DHCP scope end to 10.1.10.250: By increasing the DHCP scope range to include more available IP addresses, you provide a larger pool of addresses for devices to obtain when connecting. This can help avoid running out of available IP addresses during busy times and prevent connectivity issues. (G) Reduce the DHCP lease time to four hours: Shortening the DHCP lease time means that IP addresses are released and become available for reassignment more frequently. This prevents IP addresses from being tied up for extended periods when devices are not actively connected. A shorter lease time can help ensure that the IP address pool is better utilized and available for tenants' devices.

GPT does not pick (E) because: "(E) Disabling AP isolation: AP (Access Point) isolation is a feature that prevents wireless clients from communicating directly with each other on the same network. While it can improve security, it can also hinder connectivity in situations where clients need to communicate with each other. However, the scenario doesn't indicate a need for clients to communicate directly, so disabling AP isolation might not directly address the issue of connectivity after large attendance sessions."

DHCP lease time reducing is the only reasonable answer. If I'm forced to select another one I will select the DHCP scope increase. The scenario says after a session ends (all DHCP scopes already leased for 24 hours) and during the first session it is all fine and that means the DHCP scope is fine. But without knowing whether the number of clients are not higher there is no need to just blindly increase the DHCP scope (although in practice I will do it anyway to avoid an issue)

Selected Answer: DE
Based on the provided information, the issue appears to be related to DHCP scope depletion, as the symptoms occur after a tenant with a particularly large attendance ends its session. Therefore, increasing the DHCP scope may help to alleviate the issue. Additionally, disabling AP isolation may help to ensure that tenants are able to connect to the wireless network. Therefore, the two actions that would MOST likely reduce this issue are: D. Change the DHCP scope end to 10.1.10.250, which would increase the number of available IP addresses in the DHCP pool. E. Disable AP isolation, which would allow tenants to communicate with each other and with the company's network hardware.

(E) is wrong. AP isolation isolates people from communicating with each other, but does nothing to the "company's network hardware". See my answer above.

G. after a tenant with a particularly large attendance ends its sessions, tenants throughout the day are unable to connect... Lease time is too long and not letting new tenants connect after a large event

DHCP Scope contains only 139 IPs, and the 24 hour lease is allowing users to hold those IPs for too long.

Yes. But why you would decrease the lease time to 4 hours when the space is rented for only two hours, I do not understand...

Ultimately, the lease time being 2 or 4 hours does not matter because assuming that people are staying at the tenant, their devices will most likely renew their leases halfway through the lease time anyways. Thus, if you decrease the lease time to 4 hours, devices will try to renew their leases 2 hours after they received the lease, and if you decrease the lease time to 2 hours, devices will try to renew their leases 1 hour after they received the lease. Both 2 and 4 hours provide enough time for devices to renew their lease. Also, none of the other answers make any sense at all, so even if you yourself would configure the lease time to be 2 hours, no other answers would make sense at all.
