Cat 5 stands for 100mbps maximum, so is a faster ethernet cable not a gigabit! the standards are: Cat 5 100mbps distance 100 meters Cat 5e 1000mbps (1GB)distance 100 meters ***Cat 6 1000mbps(1GB) with 100 meters and also 10GB with 55 meters Cat 6A 10000mbps(10GB) 100 meters

Cat5 can oly transfer up to 100 mbps. To have a full gigabit connection with ethernet, you need Cat5e, or later.
