A network technician is having issues connecting an IoT sensor to the internet. The WLAN settings were entered via a custom command line, and a proper IP address assignment was received on the wireless interface. However, when trying to connect to the internet, only HTTP redirections are being received when data is requested. Which of the following will point to the root cause of the issue?

  • A. Verifying if an encryption protocol mismatch exists.
  • B. Verifying if a captive portal is active for the WLAN.
  • C. Verifying the minimum RSSI for operation in the device's documentation.
  • D. Verifying EIRP power settings on the access point.

The root cause of the issue could be a captive portal being active for the WLAN. When a device connects to a WLAN that has a captive portal, the device is typically redirected to a login page in order to gain access to the internet. This is done by the device receiving HTTP redirections when it tries to access the internet. Therefore, verifying if a captive portal is active for the WLAN would be the most likely solution to this issue.

This question isn't making sense to me. In textbooks it is recommended not to connect or allow access of IoT devices to public networks. Captive Portals are best used for public networks and business guest's usage. The only hint here is the HTTP redirect, meaning there is a possible security issue.

IoT devices just need to be on a separate LAN from the one being used for purposes where passwords and credit cards and the like are used. The question does not say anything about the device being added to the same LAN where all other devices are used or that it is being added to a public LAN. If the question does not say it, don't assume the scenario.

When there is https redirect and no internet connection, it is trying to redirect you back to a misconfigured captive portal

Selected Answer: B
B. Verifying if a captive portal is active for the WLAN. The symptoms of only receiving HTTP redirections when data is requested indicate that a captive portal is active for the WLAN. A captive portal is a web page that requires users to complete some action, such as accepting terms and conditions, before they can access the internet. It is often used in public Wi-Fi hotspots or other situations where there is a need to control or monitor access to the network. The IoT sensor may not be able to complete the required action, leading to the redirections.
