A systems administrator receives a notification from the RAID controller that the RAID 5 array is degraded. Upon logging into the server, the administrator sees that on logical disk 0, physical disk 2 has failed. Which of the following is the BEST course of action to take to resolve the problem?

  • A. Schedule system downtime and replace physical disk 2. Wait until the array is rebuilt and confirm in the RAID controller that the system is no longer degraded.
  • B. Immediately replace physical disk 2. Wait until the array is rebuilt and confirm in the RAID controller that the system is no longer degraded.
  • C. Delete logical disk 0 and manually configure a new RAID array only using the known-good working drives. Wait until the array is rebuilt and confirm in the RAID controller that the system is no longer degraded.
  • D. In the controller, convert the RAID 5 array to RAID 0 array to avoid system downtime. Wait until the array is rebuilt and confirm in the RAID controller that the system is no longer degraded.

The answer A is correct since rebuilding the array will render the system to run very slow. Same question was posted by Dion training on Udemy and the explaination makes the most sense. - Explanation: Since a RAID 5 has some built-in redundancy, it will continue to operate while in this degraded state without any additional redundancy since one of the drives has failed. It is best to schedule an authorized downtime period, replace the failed drive, rebuild the array, and confirm that the RAID is no longer reporting itself as degraded. During the rebuilding of the array, the system may perform extremely slowly, and users may experience a loss of service, which is why scheduling some downtime is necessary. Formatting the logical drive or changing a RAID 5 to a RAID 0 will cause data loss, and therefore they are not the correct answers.

B - When a single disk in a RAID 5 disk array fails, the disk array status changes to Degraded. ... If a hot spare disk is available, the controller can rebuild the data on the disk automatically. If a hot spare disk is not available, you must replace the failed disk and then initiate a rebuild. Can we assume that the array is configured with hot-swappable drives? If not then Answer A is correct. We cannot determine based on the info in the question.

The key phrase to focus on is the 'BEST course of action'. Granted, drives are now hot swappable, but just to make sure, scheduling a down time is the best thing to do, so you can avoid surprises.

Agreed. The question does not mention that the disks can be hot swapped plus rebuilding the array will impact performance which is not desirable during work hours. Additionally, scheduling something is always better especially from a change management perspective, like notifying users there will be slight system disruption is preferable to getting multiple tickets all saying that file transfers/network speed is too slow.

Degraded means diminished performance. Users must be notified. The, swop the drive and restore performance! B is incorrect!

My point is that Scheduling system downtime means documentation action to follow up the company IT rule.

It Says A in quizlet, where does it says B

should be B, they are meant to be hot swappable, so no downtime needed
