This is D. because he is able to view mail (not receiving new) and the next thing you should check is to make sure it is not in airplane mode. That will block connecting out. SSL/TLS has nothing to do with not being able to send anything, the account password could also be correct but if that was not change I would look at airplane mode first.

Which is why I am amused at the people who are trying to LEARN the material fighting tooth and nail with the professionals presenting the material. Who are the experts and who are the students? I am not trying to be rude, but refusing to accept and understand the lessons is antithetical to why we are here in the first place and likely to be an impedance to the process of learning.

Because, If you've spent any amount of time here, you'd know by now that 30% to almost half of the answers that examtopics gives as correct are actually wrong. If yo went by the answers they give here without checking the discussions, you'd for sure fail and lose all your money! (I believe they are in kahoots with CompTIA to get you to lose your money and keep paying for retakes.... otherwise they would have corrected many of the wrong answers that have been identified over a year ago in this here database of questions)

IMAP is used for receiving email, while SMTP is used for sending email. Since Joe is able to view emails but cannot send them, the issue likely lies with the SMTP configuration. Many email servers require SSL/TLS encryption for outgoing mail as a security measure. If this setting is not enabled, the SMTP server may reject the connection attempt, resulting in an error message.

Answer should be C. I deal with this issue at work all the time and it's due to an incorrect username/password for at least one of the server configs.

the NEXT thing to do as a tech is check the internet connectivity. D the other options just don't seem as simple and straight-forward as checking airplane mode.

Ok so I was first thinking maybe B for secure sending of email but secure email can also involve S/mime. But for the connection/tunnel SSL/TLS. Checking to ensure SSL/TLS is being used won't resolve it though. Not B then. Not C: if he has a connection and is able to view mail then he must have the right password to login and view the email. Not D because it was he would not be able to connect and use IMAP or SMTP because they require a internet connection and if airplane mode is on then the radios would be switched off and a connection could not be made. A is the only option left and POP3 takes the email off the server and stores it on your device and the email can also be read offline with POP3. I find it hard to know if he is online or not but I guess he is offline because SMTP won't send a email offline. I don't like this question.

Yeah, me too... But the point if the user is offline and can read the mail because of POP3, then D will be a possible answer. Since it says SMTP is valid...I will assume it is because of the internet connection

what I don't understand is, an IMAP is already set up and "Joe" is able to view email but receives an error while trying to send a message but he sees a valid SMTP server and port. Problem solved, IMAP is for receiving mails and SMTP for sending. So, when he has got both activated, what then needs to be done and why is the answer A. As per my understanding, If he is having trouble sending the message, SMTP is what needs to be looked at and not POP3. Can someone clarify and explain please.

Thought Airplane mode is the correct ans but when I tested with my phone no error appeared when its on. I will go for TLS choice.

Put pop3 only because that term is used when talking about email and I don’t know anything else about this subject kinda like how comptia does not know anything

from https://www.reddit.com/r/CompTIA/comments/hvgboc/confused_about_practice_question_regarding_email/ -- u/GenericDisturbance Ok, so, it's not D, because under IMAP the messages stay on the server (unlike POP3 (unless you reconfigure it a bit)), so you must have the internet to be able to view the messages. It's not C, because you can view the messages. Easy so far. With the others, I'm trying to follow their logic. What I think they mean is: With B, you'd need and see a different port number than 25 on the SMTP side if it was SSL/TLS, and the question just says it's "valid", i.e. doesn't need changing. Option A then. Setting to POP3, if the IMAP isn't working properly in conjunction with the SMTP server, should then allow the "valid" SMTP server to function, which is especially true of some old email providers and old smartphones that would just download the mail preview content in a quick send/receive to then be used offline (saves mobile data?). The badly worded question, or very old question. I think we're supposed to see some sort of significance in the "smartphone" maybe?

You failed to understand IMAP/POP3. With IMAP email DO stay on server AFTER you readed/downloaded. That's mean that you can wipe your phone, change device or whatever and the email will be there for you to download in every scenario. IMAP doesn't mean email stay ONLY on the server, but ALSO in the server. POP3 work the opposite, once you download/open the mail in any device that mail will be deleted from the server (after a while) so if you change device or wipe the phone that mail will be lost for good.

I believe the answer is D. Remember that IMAP caches local copies of the email onto all of your devices, therefore you can still view the email without the internet. On the other hand, SMTP requires an internet connection to send emails.

As someone that worked at a domain provider, we also sold email application licenses such as Outlook. We had many customers call about email issues during my time there and our solution never was to switch the customer to a POP3 email. Not only is this an incoming server and won't effect your ability to send outgoing mail, but it doesn't even make sense to configure on a mobile device.

Its D. When you are in air plane mode you can read all your downloaded emails i.e. emails downloaded in your account but you wont able to send messages. A message will be displayed as phone is offline etc.

Your wrong about that, you cannot view emails without internet in IMAP, you need internet for that. Only POP3 emails can be viewed without internet.

binayD is right. As an example, if you are using iPhone 'Mail' application and gmail is set up there (which is IMAP by default) you are able to see the cached messages without internet access.

An incorrect password sounds simple, but many turn out to be this simple issue. If you can receive email and cannot send email this means the authentication required by the outgoing server is not configured or needs to be re-configured.Now you should know the correct answer.

B. Ensure the SSL/TLS option is being used When I check my iPhone via settings=>Passwords and Accounts=>gMail=>Account=>SMTP=>SMTP Server, I see an option to turn SSL on or off and port 465 is selected, and that the Username and Password fields say "optional." So it seems that SSL turned off would be the culprit. Not D - Airplane mode turns off your internet connection - so you cannot receive or send email. Not A - Pop3 is for receiving email. Not C - Username and password are optional fields

B - "Joe sees a valid SMTP server and port" -- it says the server and port are valid - but it doesn't say that the SSL/TLS box is ticked for the SMTP configuration. NOTE: POP3 is for incoming mail only, so will not help with sending mail.
