Topic #: 1
[All 220-1001 Questions]

Ann, an accountant, reports that after turning on her new laptop, she received a message stating her IP address is already in use on the system. She tried going back to her old desktop, which she now only uses for email, but received the same message. The technician checks the account and sees a comment that Ann requires a special network setup to connect to the banking software. Which of the following should the technician do to resolve the issue?

  • A. Remove the static IP configuration from the desktop.
  • B. Set the laptop configuration to DHCP to prevent conflicts.
  • C. Replace the network card in the laptop, as it may be defective.

I believe the answer should be: A. Remove the static IP configuration from the desktop. The question says that she needs a 'special network setup to access banking software' and that she now only uses her desktop for email. So she needs to have the same network config on her new laptop that she had on her old desktop to access the bank. Her desktop should be switched to DHCP because she only uses it for email now. Another nonsense question from comptia - in the real world the tech notes would be more specific and state that she needs a static ip. The notes would not be vague and simply say "she needs a special network setup."

Removing the static IP from the desktop would fix the laptop's conflict while keeping the special step-up on the laptop. Setting the laptop to DHCP would element the conflict, but she would not be able to connect to the banking software. How does that resolve the problem?

"She tried going back to her old desktop, which she now only uses for email, but received the same message." She only uses the old desktop for email so it wouldn't matter if the desktop had access to the banking software...

The question does not indicate that t a special IP configuration is required for emails. The question does stipulate that a special configuration was noted for 'banking software'. It is logical to assume that this configuration was used on the laptop in order to facilitate that use of the banking software on the laptop. The logical resolution is to remove the static configuration on the desktop, as this will continue to be used for email access only, and to retain the static configuration on the laptop to facilitate the functionality of the 'banking software'. The answer is 'A'. If you still think the answer is 'B', you're using this resource incorrectly - don't just take the answers as gospel (especially as this is one of many 'trojan' questions with which these dumps are seeded to weed out cheats), but try using your actual brain to consider the answer. If you find yourself making up non-existent details such as "removing the static address from the desktop will stop email working", not only did you NOT read the question correctly, but you clearly do not understand the topic and should return to your study books.

Can I just say as a person with ADHD, I absolutely despise how some of these questions are worded??

The key thing here is that she says her Desktop is now only used for email. If you removed the static IP configuration, she will not be able to access her email. So B makes sense here for me.

When you remove the static configuration from the desktop you must either enter a new static configuration or select DHCP. The network utility makes you choose either static or DHCP. So from that standpoint, answer A is not complete. If answer A added the text "and select DHCP" it would be the better answer. As others have pointed out this is a poor question but after thinking about this for a while B is the best answer but does not solve the problem.

Why? Setting the desktop up to use dhcp should be no problem to access her email but on the other hand since the banking software is a special software it would probably need a static IP address.

B is correct, the A+ book and even in their practice questions has slightly different versions of this going back to IP conflicts. As someone who went thru examination writing you have to have distractors in the question. The distractor is the "she needs a special network setup". If you consider the root issue is two same IPs. CompTIA primarily teachers to solve with the most simple way. using DHCP you will never have to worry about IP conflicts. Also other questions in the official practice they ask what should have static IP and it is usually a common resource like printer, it is inefficient to set up any laptop or desktop in a business environment with static IPs, Only in SOHO. Alsmost all the arguments for any of the questions goes back to interpretation of the background information, they purposely put distractors in the question.

B is not correct. She needs a static IP address on her laptop. When you remove the static IP from the desktop it will default to DHCP and that will solve the problem and address all the aspects of the question.

This question is really poor, poor because we need to know if the IP is reserved on DHCP for the laptop. If the desktop PC is always on, it can potential automatically assign the same static laptop IP(whilst the laptop is powered off)and we're stuck in the same place again...

The answer would be B. The reason why is 1) if you remove the static IP config from the desktop, she will not be able to access email 2) replace the network card does nothing 3) bridge the LAN connection is not an answer 4) set laptop configuration to DHCP will give her access to the network. "Special network setup" does not have anything to do with a static or DHCP IP address, having special network setup would be provided in active directory to access different software.

Seriously, its A. Remove the static ip config on the Desktop "which she now only uses for Email". The special Network configuration required for her banking software to run has been set up on her Laptop and thats causing the conflict. So get it off her desktop already and get on with the next question. :)

And in an hour or a few days a new IT support ticket from her will show up stating the the banking software she uses is no longer working. So sure, B solves the stated problem of the conflict, but it leaves another obvious problem unattended. I'm not sure "technically correct is the best kind of correct" actually works here.

I had exactly this question in my exam. I selected to remove the static IP from the desktop and think also afterwards it was correct. I 'm not having any faily in any 2.x Domain. If this question relates to Domain 2.0 Network, my answer should be right. Any thoughts / comments?

If the problem is with Laptop, how does the desktop setup would help? She is having IP conflict on her new Laptop, CompTia wants you to fix the laptop issue, not the desktop. Set laptop to use DHCP is what to me look the right answer.

The thing is, actually both Systems have the same static IP adress. As the user need a special IP configuration for the banking software. Tis is the reason for the IP conflict. <- static IPs As she is using the old on only for mail, she does not net the static IP on the desktop and it can removed there. DHCP would be wrong in my opinion as it says a special config, that would be Static IP. Does this helps
