On a machine running several X servers, the different instances of the X11 server are identified by a display name like:0, :1, :2, etc. The display name is a combination of a colon (:) followed by a number that represents the display number and screen number of the X server. The display number represents the instance of the X server and the screen number represents the number of displays attached to that server.
