Exam CBAP topic 1 question 358 discussion

Actual exam question from IIBA's CBAP
Question #: 358
Topic #: 1
[All CBAP Questions]

A business analyst (BA) elicits requirements for the sales order processing of multiple product lines. Elicitation reveals that the business processes for the sales orders of most products follow similar activity patterns that have been established over a number of years. Some of the new proposed seasonal products, however, will necessitate major variations in the process flow of some departments. The seasonal products are likely to be different every year. The business needs to carefully adapt its business practices so that the significant but seasonal variations in some of the business processes for the new products are handled adequately without disrupting the processes for the other established products.
Which of the following approaches must the BA take to manage the requirements for sales order processing in the long term?

  • A. Reference specific departments in the requirements for the seasonal products
  • B. Reference specific departments in the requirements for the established products
  • C. Use a high level of abstraction for the seasonal products to make them less subject to revision during a change
  • D. Use a high level of abstraction for the established products to make them less subject to revision during a change

Selected Answer: D
Use a high level of abstraction for the established products to make them less subject to revision during a change is correct. It is because seasonal products are likely to be different every year so they may require significant changes to related business processes and achieving a level of abstraction that makes them less subject to revision during a change would be difficult. On the other hand, achieving a high level of abstraction for established products to make them less subject to revision during a change is possible because these are stable products and aligned with the objective that change/revision causes minimal or no disruption to other established products.

Selected Answer: D
D is the best answer because established products typically have stable processes and are less subject to frequent revisions. Therefore, using a high level of abstraction for their requirements makes them less likely to be affected by changes and disruptions in the business environment.

Selected Answer: D
Option D, "Use a high level of abstraction for the established products to make them less subject to revision during a change," is not the best choice in this scenario primarily because the established products already have well-defined, stable business processes. On the other hand, the seasonal products, which are subject to change every year and require significant variations in process flow, would benefit more from a high level of abstraction (Option C). Abstraction in this context allows for greater flexibility.

Selected Answer: C
Option C: "The seasonal products are likely to be different every year." It means that requirements will be changed, and a high level of abstraction will make them more adaptable to changes without affecting the established products' requirements 5.2.5 Requirements that are represented in a general manner, without direct ties to a particular tool or organizational structure, tend to be more reusable. These requirements are also less subject to revision during a change. As requirements are expressed in more detail, they become more tightly associated with a specific solution or solution option.

On the other hand. If requirements are changeable and specific for the department they need to be revised more frequently . In this case option D is correct answer.

Answer C and D could be good. I will choose C, cause the description told "that the seasonal products are likely to be different every year", means that they will be retired after a season and they need less revision than other long term products.

BABOK 5.2.4.3 Requirements that are represented in a general manner (with a high level of abstraction), tend to be more reusable (That's typically the seasonal products). As requirements are expressed in more details, they become more tightly associated with a specific solution (That's typically the established products). Best answer is C

Well done but you might have mixed up the association of "high level of abstraction". In this case the established products should be represented with a high level of abstraction because of the more general manner in which the requirement are specified therefore making them less subject for revision as opposed to the more specific(seasonal products) ones which limits them for reuse.

I apologize - I re-read the question and it should be D: Use a high level of abstraction for the established products to make them less subject to revision during a change
