Why not use a custom model (both targets, and the DefaultModelBinder)?

With a custom model binder, you can hook into the BindingContext when an action is called on a controller and do custom binding. You could use a model and send the data as JSON over AJAX, which is what I would probably do. Microsoft likes to push their custom model binder solutions.
