I think the question is wrong and about WDS: https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/wds-boot-support The operating system deployment functionality of Windows Deployment Services (WDS) is being partially deprecated. Starting with Windows 11, workflows that rely on boot.wim from installation media or on running Windows Setup in WDS mode will no longer be supported. When you PXE-boot from a WDS server that uses the boot.wim file from installation media as its boot image, Windows Setup automatically launches in WDS mode. This workflow is deprecated for Windows 11 and newer boot images. The following deprecation message is displayed:

MDT can do windows 11 images, I use MDT and Windows 11 can be used. However, this was only tested using .wim files and not the entire set of installation media

Wouldn't you need wds to do this?

https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/configmgr/mdt/release-notes#supported-platforms Should that be Windows 10 because all research states that MDT doesn't support Windows 11 including the link above.

Agreed. From the link: "The following OS versions are supported for deployment with this build of MDT: Windows 10, version 1809 Windows 10, version 1803 Windows 10, version 1709 Other supported versions of Windows 10 Windows 8.1 Windows 7 Windows Server 2019 Windows Server 2016 Windows Server 2012 R2 Windows Server 2012 Windows Server 2008 R2 Note: MDT doesn't support Windows 10 ARM64 devices, Windows 11 and Windows Server 2022 operating systems." However, despite the official docs (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/mem/configmgr/mdt/release-notes#supported-platforms) from 10/03/2022, just 10 days later a user posted a guide outlining how to do exactly this (https://4sysops.com/archives/deploy-windows-11-with-microsoft-deployment-toolkit-mdt/) so perhaps the Microsoft documentation is just incomplete still.

Regardless, of whether or not the question meant Windows 10 or 11 it Install WDS services doesn't seem necessary based on the information in the question. The only thing WDS would add is the ability for target computers to boot into the PE over the network as opposed to using a USB/DVD installation media to deploy Windows. It doesn't say admin effort has to be minimized, only that it had to be deployed to 100 computers via the MDT that was installed on the on prem server. 1. Create deployment share on MDT server 2. Add image to deployment share 3. Create a task sequence following these steps, MDT will generate PE Lite touch boot images that can be use to create installation media used to boot and deploy the 100 devices OR that same image can be imported to a WDS server to allow those same computers to boot from the image over the network instead of having to bring physical installation media to each device. The WDS part does not fit with the goal of the question but the other 3 steps do achieve that.
