An external Switch is a conversion of a pnysical NIC into a virtual Switch, it allows VMs to go outside the boudaries of the physical host; An internal Switch will create a virtual NIC on the physical Host, thus Network communication between the host and the VMs is possible (File shares); Whereas a Private Switch will allow network communications only between the VMs that are attached to it.
