You have an Azure subscription that contains 100 virtual machines.
You regularly create and delete virtual machines.
You need to identify unattached disks that can be deleted.
What should you do?

  • A. From Microsoft Azure Storage Explorer, view the Account Management properties.
  • B. From the Azure portal, configure the Advisor recommendations.
  • C. From Azure Cost Management, view Advisor Recommendations.
  • D. From Azure Cost Management, view Cost Analysis.
Show Suggested Answer Hide Answer
Suggested Answer: A 🗳️
You can find unused disks in the Azure Storage Explorer console.Once you drill down to the Blob containers under a storage account, you can see the lease state of the residing VHD (the lease state determines if the VHD is being used by any resource) and the VM to which it is leased out. If you find that the lease state and the VM fields are blank, it means that the VHD in question is unused. The screenshot below shows two active VHDs being used by VMs as data and OS disks.
The name of the VM and lease state are shown in the "VM Name" and "Lease State" columns, respectively.

Going to go against the grain here and say Answer A - Azure Storage Explorer. The wording on the answers is poor - I could not find an Azure Storage Explorer 'Account Management Properties' - but looking under the 'disks' section and viewing resource groups shows unallocated disks in black and white - very easy to see. From the Azure Cost Management section, I couldn't get any of the recommendations or cost analysis to trigger for unallocated disks and this article here even cites it as a weakness of the tool: https://www.cloudhealthtech.com/blog/optimize-azure-spend "Similarly, there have been issues with the Azure Advisor being unable to identify unattached disks, and failing to notice over-provisioned resources. Both the question and that articles are outdated. this question is not valid anymore. both A, C, D are not fully accurate answers.

The question does not state that you need to go and delete unattached disks. Read the question, it states you need to 'identify' unattached disks to delete. The most appropriate and recommended way from Microsoft is to view Advisor recommendations. Then you can go and use storage explorer after "identifying" them in Advisor. As per usual, read the question, don't make assumptions.

Medium You have disks which have not been attached to a VM for more than 30 days. Please evaluate if you still need the disk. 5 Disks This is what I saw in From Azure Cost Management, view Advisor Recommendations.

Initially I was drawn to advisor and cost management. However, cost is not mentioned and it states you regularly delete machines. Therefore storage explorer seems much faster and more suitable for the requirement.

Cost Advisor contains many issues which might include the unattached disks. But the question is mainly ask about unattached disks because of creating and deleting VMs. So derictly check Storage Account and the disks' Properties.

This question must be outdated! the correct answer is not even in options. To check an unattached disk, go to Disks and then add a column 'disk state'. This will show you which ones are not attached to any VM.

For this question, i would go for A since Azure Advisor would only detect the unattached disk after several days which the questions doesnt state which mean we need to find the unattached disk urgently without waiting.

I believe the answer is A, we can see the unattached disks easily using A. C would also be a reasonable answer if you dont want to manually select

I'm looking for an MS document and find the below link. https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/virtual-machines/disks-find-unattached-portal?toc=/azure/virtual-machines/linux/toc.json&bc=/azure/virtual-machines/linux/breadcrumb/toc.json basically, it says that; Unmanaged disks: Find and delete unattached disks Unmanaged disks are VHD files that are stored as page blobs in Azure storage accounts. If you have unmanaged disks that aren't attached to a VM, no longer need the data on them, and would like to delete them, the following process explains how to do so from the Azure portal: Sign in to the Azure portal. Search for and select Disks (Classic). You are presented with a list of all your unmanaged disks. Any disk that has "-" in the Attached to column is an unattached disk.
