Actual exam question from Microsoft's 70-779
Question #: 40
Topic #: 1
[All 70-779 Questions]

You have a table in a Power Pivot model that is loaded from a Microsoft SQL Server database.
The source table has four columns named ID, Price, Quantity, and Total. Total is derived by multiplying Price and Quantity. ID is a unique row identifier.
You need to minimize the amount of memory used to load the model. The solution must ensure that you can create visualizations based on Price, Quantity, and
Total.
What should you do?

  • A. Replace the Total column by using a measure
  • B. Replace the Total column by using a calculated column
  • C. From Query Editor, remove duplicate rows from the table
  • D. Move the Total column to a lookup table

‘A’ seems to be correct. Measure can replace column to minimize memory consumption. https://support.office.com/en-us/article/create-a-memory-efficient-data-model-using-excel-and-the-power-pivot-add-in-951c73a9-21c4-46ab-9f5e-14a2833b6a70

from the link: One memory-saving technique is to replace regular or calculated columns with calculated measures. The classic example is Unit Price, Quantity, and Total.

A is right, Tested. One memory-saving technique is to replace regular or “calculated columns” with “calculated measures”. And “calculated measures” = SumX, avgX, countX…etc (iterator functions) Calculated measures means {“calculated columns” + “aggregate”}, the key point here is that at last it will release “calculated columns” temporary memory usage. “Iterator functions are looping through all rows in the input table and storing the expression result in a temporary memory storage. At the end they apply the aggregation on the temporary storage results, release the memory usage, and visualize the calculation result.”

A is the correct answer...measure reduces memory usage compared to calculated columns that takes more.

"A. Replace the Total column by using a measure" is the correct answer to optimize the workbook you can replace the calculated columns by measures and you can use this measure in any visualization instead, in our case it's possible to do so.

The correct answer is B. You cannot create slicers or axes with measures, and the question specifies that visualizations need to be made for 'Total'.

Also, Total is defined row by row, meaning that once again it must be a calculated column.

No, it could be a measure with a SUMX function. Correct answer is A.

Visualizations need to be made for Total...therefore you would put the new measure in the values section.
