Question #: 157
Topic #: 1
[All 70-742 Questions]

Your company has a marketing department.
The network contains an Active Directory domain named contoso.com.
The domain contains two top-level organizational units (OUs) named MKT_Comps and MKT_Users. MKT_Comps contains the computer accounts for the computers in the marketing department. MKT_Users contains the user accounts for the users in the marketing department.
You link a new Group Policy object (GPO) named GPO1 to MKT_Comps.
You need to deploy a VPN connection to all of the users who sign in to the marketing department computers. The users must be able to modify the VPN connection settings.
Where in GPO1 should you create the settings for the VPN connection?

  • A. Computer Configuration/Policies/Administrative Templates/Network/network Connections
  • B. User Configuration/Policies/Administrative Templates/Network/Network Connections
  • C. User Configuration/Preferences/Control Panel Settings/Network Options
  • D. Computer Configuration/Preferences/Control Panel Settings/Network Options

answer D. Computer Configuration/Preferences/Control Panel Settings/Network Options is correct. GPO1 is applied to MKT_Comps OU, in the OU, all accounts are computer accounts, therefore you must use "Computer Configuration\Preferences" to satisfy the requirements:- i) You need to deploy a VPN connection to all of the users who sign in to the marketing department computers. ii) The users must be able to modify the VPN connection settings.

You link a new Group Policy object (GPO) named GPO1 to MKT_Comps This means, the preference to be applied is a COMPUTER preference. Correct answer is the indicated one. D!

the answer is correct but jesus wept, microsoft have named the GPOs back to front. Network Options > is where you configure VPN connections Network Connections > is where you configure network options :\ Typical Microsoft.

"all of the users who sign in to the marketing department computers" is why it's computer configuration and not user configuration; for those that are wondering why it isn't C.

Seems right. Preference due to the statement "Users must be able to modify"

A lot said here already but to give some insight: - GPO is linked to Ou with computers so the settings will work if configured for computers (any setting for users won`t apply since user object are in different Ou). - Preferences give possibility to change the setting by the user, standard policies don`t (the force to use the setting) So the only possibility here is D

The key here is the "users need to be able to modify the VPN connection. Policies cannot be modified, they simply apply or do not apply. Preferences can be modified. That solves this question. D is correct.

To add to my comment, the question does not specifically say "Marketing users", it says "users", thus this implies that EVERY user needs access to these. A User policy would not work for this required scope. Confirming the answer is D!

also I test it and C is also correct. Im just not sure which one one better choice in this situation, I vote for D, since you can set VPN in the computer and most of the users doesnt know how to setup and establish vpn connection

I think the key here is that if a marketing user logs in to a non-marketing computer, it should not apply. Therefore it is tied to specific computers.

ooking at this closer, I could be totally misunderstanding this, it is a bit confusing, but loopback settings are not mentioned, so we need to assume they are not in use. Even if they were, they would simply repeat the computer policy step one last additional time at the end. If a User preference is applied to an OU with computers, do the settings apply to anything? If a Computer preference is applied to an OU with only Users in it, do the settings apply to anything? In order for the users to be allowed to modify the settings, it must be a preference, not a policy. that narrows it down to 2 answers as possibilities for being correct. Since GPO1 is applied to the OU with computers in it. I would think that if we used user preferences, they would attempt to apply to computers, and do nothing. If GPO1 was linked to the OU with Users in it, then the user preferences would apply. I need to pull my previous post, I think the answer needs to be D.

I think you are wrong. When Loopback Processing is enabled, the Copmuter's settings takes precedence over the User's settings. Even in Merge Mode. From GP Editor: "Merge" indicates that the user settings defined in the computer's Group Policy Objects and the user settings normally applied to the user are combined. If the settings conflict, the user settings in the computer's Group Policy Objects take precedence over the user's normal settings. I think that D is correct.

The policy is being applied to the computers OU so wouldn't it be D since it's a computer configuration?

Computer Settings apply only to Computers within the Linked OU User Settings apply only to Users within the Linked OU (Unless Loopback Processing is enabled) https://blogs.technet.microsoft.com/askds/2013/02/08/circle-back-to-loopback/ The Question is asking for the GPO1 Settings to Apply to USERS logging into MKT_Comp Computers. Because GPO1 is linked to MKT_Comps Computers OU, and this GPO is where the settings will be configured, the User Configurations>Preferences should be configured with Loopback Processing Merging Mode enabled under Computer Configuration > Policies. This will ensure that the User Configurations adhere to the settings of GPO1 rather that the GPO that would be linked to their OU.

I think this is just a matter of interpretation of the following line: "You need to deploy a VPN connection to all of the users who sign in to the marketing department computers" To me it reads like this has to be applied on the computers, regardless of who is logging in to them. Therefore, apply in computer preferences, and D is the correct answer.

D is ok GPO applied to Comps so GPO needs Comp setting. Users logging on to the comps will see the settings applied on the comps.
