Clarity for arch, Web1 is your internal server hosting the app. You want to make sure it is authenticating for your external users. Do you dont want to do pre authentication if you want web1 to authenticate the users. You have to pass through. C is the correct answer

The question is very badly written. In fact, we could drastically improve the understanding of the question by adding "You deploy an Active Directory Federation Services (AD FS) infrastructure and a Web Application Proxy *ON SERVER1* to provide access to WebApp1 for remote users." This Server1 would indeed, have to use Pass Through in order for WebApp1/Web1 to authenticate the users.

I can only assume this is suggesting that Pass-Through is being used in order to allow Webapp to perform authentication on its own rather than using ADFS Pre-Authentication. I cannot seem to find any documentation that suggest that web applications cannot support ADFS Pre-Auth otherwise..
