Actual exam question from Microsoft's 70-742
Question #: 158
Topic #: 1
[All 70-742 Questions]

Your network contains an Active Directory domain named contoso.com. The network contains several IP subnets. One of the subnets uses a network ID of
192.168.10.0/24.
You link a Group Policy object (GPO) named GPO1 to the domain.
You need to map a drive to a specific file share on the computers in the 192.168.10.0/24 network only.
What should you do?

  • A. From the User Configuration node of GPO1, configure the Folder Redirection settings. Link a WMI filter to GPO1.
  • B. From the Computer Configuration node of GPO1, configure the Network Connections settings. Link a WMI filter to GPO1.
  • C. From the User Configuration node of GPO1, create a Group Policy preference that uses item-level targeting.
  • D. From the Computer Configuration node of GPO1, create a Group Policy preference that uses item-level targeting.

I am painfully incorrect about this. The Provided Answer is Correct. It seems that the only location to configure Drive Mappings is in: User Configurations > Preferences > Windows Settings > Drive Maps Please correct me if I'm wrong; as I have not found a way to configure Drive Mappings in Computer Configurations. That said, if the desire is to have the Policy Settings apply to Users accessing Computers within a specific Subnet, as implied in the question, the GPO would configure the User Drive Maps Preferences. Loopback Processing would also be needed IN THE EVENT that the User Accounts are in an OU with Conflicting Users Preferences configured for Drive Mappings. HOWEVER this is not indicated in this specific question, therefore, Drive Mappings are assumed to be Inherited from the Domain-Linked GPO. And because this is a GPO Linked to the Domain and not an OU, Item-Level-Targeting, which is configured in the Common Tab of the Drive Maps Properties, would ensure that the specific User Preferences would only apply to Computers within the designated Subnet (IP Range) and not to any other computers, as would be the case using WMI. These questions are CRAZY specific....

This one is correct. Computer configuration/preferences/windows settings, you can configure Network Shares, but not mapped drives. User configuration/preferences/windows settings, you have an option to configure mapped drives there. also, common tab, Item level targeting, you will see an IP address range option. The answer is C

C is correct. I`ve tested the setting on my lab and it works... As other wrote Mapped drives are available for users only but it looks that Item-LevelTargeting isn`t so picky to use user GPO and target computer specific attribute: "An IP Address Range targeting item allows a preference item to be applied to computers or USERS only if the processing computer's IP address is within the range specified in the targeting item." https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/previous-versions/windows/it-pro/windows-server-2012-r2-and-2012/dn789189(v=ws.11) So it looks like you don`t need any loopback.

Mapped drives are fundamentally designed to be tied to a user account.

C: is correct and that's why: you link the GPO to the domain so ever User is effected with Item-Targeting you exclude every User who is not working on a Computer in the descriped network (192.168.10.0/24)

Yes, that's what they want to do. Not in the network, no drive.

the correct answer must be D, because the policy must be applied on the computer that in/within the subnet => You need to map a drive to a specific file share on the computers in the 192.168.10.0/24 network only.
